Elizabeth "Lizzie" (King) Johnson, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021 at her home in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 99. Elizabeth was born on April 7, 1922, in Hitchita, Oklahoma, to Hully and Alice (McNac) King. She was proud of her American Indian heritage and being a member of the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma.
Lizzie, as she was more affectionally known, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She will be missed by many. Lizzie was raised in Hitchita and attended Eufaula Boarding School in Eufaula, Oklahoma and Chilocco Indian Agricultural Boarding School, located seven miles north of Newkirk, Oklahoma. While at Chilocco, Lizzie first met her future husband, Wilbourne Johnson. During her attendance at Chilocco, she learned life skills such as cooking and sewing. Her ability to sew led her to create various articles for family and friends using Seminole design. Lizzie had a love for sports and enjoyed playing tennis and basketball. She often bragged about competing against and beating male participants.
After graduating from Chilocco, Lizzie moved to Wichita, Kansas, looking for work. She met Wilbourne again as he was already working in Wichita. They were married March 3, 1943.
Lizzie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilbourne Johnson; sisters, Mary Street, Eliza "Janie" Bishop and Hazel Fields; and brothers, Daniel "Billy" King and Jesse King.
She is survived by her sons, Ron and Wayne Johnson; daughters, Gerri Pulaski and Gwen La Deaux; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as extended family members, loved ones, and friends.
Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday, June 2, 2021, with Funeral service following at 1:00 PM, both at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 W. Highway 54, Wichita, Kansas 67209.
