Doug always wanted to fly. He listened to a radio program during WWII called "Call 'L' for Lanky". It featured the exploits of a Lancaster bomber in the European Theater of the war. Doug was encouraged to join the Royal Canadian Air Force by his first Flight Instructor when he was still in high school. Doug enlisted in the RCAF and became a Flight Officer. On his second assignment he was stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, where he was Flight Officer on the Lancaster Bomber he had dreamt of flying as a young boy. The bomber had been reconfigured as a Search and Rescue plane for covering the land and sea in the North Atlantic region. That same Lancaster has been restored to its original WWII flying condition by Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
After Doug's Air Force career, he attended Northrop University in California to become an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineer. Upon graduation, he accepted a job at Cessna Aircraft (now Textron) as a Flight Test Engineer. Upon retirement he had reached the position of Chief of Engineering Flight Test.
After retirement he enjoyed continuing contract work in aviation.
