Doris was born on September 1, 1926 in Burlington, Kansas to Franklin and Abigail Gillies. She grew up in Fredonia KS, along with her 3 brothers and 1 sister.
Growing up during the depression wasn’t easy, but Doris never complained about how hard life was. She always found something bright and positive about the times.
Doris raised a daughter, Sandra, on her own with the help of her mother. She worked two jobs, while providing a warm, loving home.
Doris, Sandra and her mother moved to Wichita, KS in the 1950’s. She met Dwight Houdek and got married to him in 1959. She had 2 more children, a son, Edward, and a daughter, Kerri.
Doris and Dwight bought Welch Supreme Cleaners in the early 1970’s where she was active in the business until she was 70. Doris retired and her son, Ed, took over the business.
When Doris was not working hard, she enjoyed reading, doing word search puzzles, and needlepoint.
Doris has many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Each one held a special place in her heart.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Dwight, son, Edward, 3 brothers Gerald Gillies, Kenneth Gillies, LeRoy Gillies and 1 sister, Virginia Lawson, Grandson, Troy Reed and Great-granddaughter, Quinn Storm.
Doris is survived by her 2 daughters, Sandra (Leon) Breedlove and Kerri (Bart) Storm; grandchildren, Jason, Zachary, Brandi and Carl Storm, Cassondra Kendall, Christopher Houdek and Billy Houdek; great-grandchildren, Heather, Michael, Clayton, Joey, Zacariah, Devon, Will, Joseph, Graham, Whitney, Kalei, Joshua, Brookelynn, Rory and Damien; and great-great-grandchildren, Mikaela, Asia and Kahlil.
Doris was known for her generous heart and compassion. As was well said, Doris was a real, down to earth person, who loved family and loved life. She loved her customers, and they loved her too. Many would stop by Welch’s just to say hello to Doris. Her life was taking care of others. She always had good advice, was a good listener, and always knew what to say for any situation. Her love and patient ear will be sorely missed.
