Charlie was raised in Wichita and attended Wichita East High School. He met his future wife, Renate Arnold while he was stationed at the US Army Vehicle Depot at Illesheim, Germany. They were married on post April 21, 1949, a marriage that would last 70 years. He was called back into duty during the Korean War, and later served in the US Army Reserve for 25 years.
Charlie worked as an electrician for French, Dickey, and Doonan Electric companies before becoming an electrical code inspector for the City of Wichita. He also taught night classes in Electrical Code for Wichita Votech.
Charlie is survived by sister Margaret Devins of Newton, daughter Angela McQuery (Richard Bartlett) of Newton, son Chuck Thorpe (Jon Raupp) of Manhattan, and sister-in-law Sandra Manning (Robert) of Wichita; grandsons Christopher (Sara), Brian (Sarah), and Daniel (Audrey) McQuery all of Wichita; great-grandchildren Dylan, Seth, Lillian, Xander, Paul, and Lilyth McQuery; great-great-granddaughter Mia McQuery; nieces Emily Devins, Susan Thorpe (Jay McLaughlin), and Kellee Thorpe. He is preceded in death by wife Renate, brother Robin, sister and brother-in-law Raedeane and Earl Parks, brother and sister-in-law Eugene and Betty Thorpe, and nephews Richard and Thomas Thorpe.
Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 W. Highway 54, in Wichita, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM.
