Charlene Gemar, known to her friends and family simply as Char, was called home Sunday, May 28, 2017 after losing a ten year battle with kidney cancer. Char remained optimistic throughout and the courage she displayed will always be an inspiration to those of us who walked this difficult journey with her. Char was born at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC on April 13, 1955. She attended and graduated from Vidalia High School in 1973 and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Houston. She met and married Charles D. Gemar (Sam) in Savannah, GA. Two children were born to this union, Grant and Ashley both of Wichita, KS. Char’s distinguished career included ten years as a Human Resources Specialist for the United States Army and twenty years as a public relations officer for NASA, Johnson Space Center, in Houston, TX, the 89th Regional Support Command in Wichita, KS and retired as the Chief, Public Affairs Officer for the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, KS. She will be always be remembered for her love of family, sharp wit, and making time for her friends. Char is survived by her husband “Sam”, her son Grant, her daughter Ashley, a loving extended family, and her many friends and neighbors. A celebration of Char’s life is scheduled for 2 pm, Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Lakeview Funeral Home, 12100 E 13th Street N, Wichita, KS 67206. Char will be laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Scotland, SD. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Freedom Hooves Therapeutic Riding Center, P.O. Box 782622, Wichita, KS 67278.
