Retired CMSgt Carl "Max" Duggan, United States Air Force, age 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, on Monday, January 9, 2023. Born October 30, 1936 to Roy Duggan and Elizabeth (Eckerlin) Duggan in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Max was very proud of his military service, having served his country in the United States Air Force retiring after 30 years. During that time he worked on multiple aircraft and Titan II missiles. He received numerous individual and team awards and commendations during his service. The one he was most proud of was the Airman’s Medal for Heroism which he received for descending deep into an active Titan II missile silo, extinguishing a fire, disarming ordinance and making the missile inactive. Later in life, he was interviewed about the circumstances of the incident and was later cited in the book “Titan II a History of a Cold War Missile Program by David K. Stumpf.
He enjoyed swimming and doing water aerobics which he did at the YMCA and the McConnell AFB aqua center, for years, stopping when he was 84 after achieving a 1000 miles swam. He was also an avid reader.
After retirement Max became interested in woodworking, building among other things, furniture and dollhouses. He was also proud to give you a tour of his house to see his accomplishments. He enjoyed travel having visited Italy, many places in Northern Europe and Mexico. Some of his favorite travels stateside were Washington DC, New York, Hawaii, Alaska, Pennsylvania and Las Vegas.
He always spoke his mind so you knew where he was coming from. He loved using catch phrases such “Why buy the cow when you’re getting the milk free”; I want you people to leave so I can rest”; and in response to the question what’s for dinner he would say “wind pudding and air sauce”! Often, when asked, “How are you?” he would respond “none of your business”; and when you were leaving his favorite was “Vaya Con Dios (go with God)”. All of these would generate additional conversation which was his goal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Elizabeth Duggan; loving wife of 60 years, Lorraine Duggan; and son, Keith Duggan.
Max is survived by his daughter, Karen (Norman) Townsend; son, Karl Duggan; grandchildren, Christopher (Cathy) Cantrell, Holly (Corey) Smith, Noelle (David) Hinojosa, Kelly (Craig) Peterson, Alyssa (Matt) Ramsdell; and great-grandchildren, Sean, Keaton, Cambree, Corbin, Sophia, Leilani, Thurston, Parker, Holden, Ryan, Gavin, Alex, Jackson, Ella and Abigail.
Funeral service for Max will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 17, 2023 with visitation one hour prior, at Lakeview Funeral Home, 12100 E. 13th Street N., Wichita, Kansas 67206.
Burial will take place following the service with full Military Funeral Honors, at Lakeview Cemetery in the Garden of Reflections.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Max's memory may be sent to the Kansas Humane Society, who he supported many years due to his love for dogs.
