Gary Lance Hill, born August 13, 1938, went home to his heavenly father on November 8, 2018, surrounded by his wife and kids. He was born in Bowie Texas, but lived in Wichita Falls the majority of his life. He attended Wichita Falls High School, and was a loyal Coyote his entire life (although he did become a Rider Raider fan when his grandkids attended). He worked for the US Post Office for 34 years, retiring in 2000.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He married Linda Mooring June 3, 1957 in Grandfield, Oklahoma. Opposites do attract. He had little patience, and he felt Linda had more than anyone should have been allowed. Linda liked to linger, and he was ready to move-on to the next thing yet love allowed him to have unlimited patience with his grandkids and great grandkids. His kids wondered how that happened.
He was an avid sports fan, and was a strong follower of the University of Texas. He created lasting memories with his family attending Longhorn football and baseball games, and many high school teams, especially WF Coyotes, Rider Baseball, Leander Rouse, Southlake Carroll and others.
He was a long time local youth league coach. He coached his kids & grandkids in football, baseball, softball, and even basketball and soccer when no one else was around. He was still known as Coach Hill to many. Serving in the US Marines was a lifelong influence.
His family learned important life lessons from him....high school football was important. Even though you might be little, you could overcome it by being tough. As long as you worked out each day you could eat anything you wanted. As with his mother, he was always offering you something to eat. It showed he loved you, or maybe it was just an excuse for him to have another snickers himself. He loved Crispi Cereal, and only his daughter Terri could make it right, with 11 slices of bananas on the bottom and 14 on the top. Anybody else would get it wrong. His traditional biscuits and sausage gravy will certainly be missed on Christmas morning. Progressive Rummy card games gave a lot of family camaraderie, and probably created a few arguments as well. He continued to argue the Civil War with his son Randy, and watching Texas Ranger baseball with daughter Penni was something he really held on to until the end. His grandkids enjoyed hearing him impersonate Scobey doo, Rudolph, Santa, and sneaky snake (a character he made up),
He is preceded in death by his parents RD and Tera Walker Hill of Wichita Falls, In-laws Jimmy and June Mooring, great-grandson Vincent Hill, and a host of other relatives, as well as special life-long friends Wayne and Joanie Haynes.
His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Linda Hill of Wichita Falls. His Son Randy Hill of Wichita Falls, Daughter Penni Kerr of Wichita Falls, Son Kenny & Julie Hill of Southlake, Texas. Daughter Terri Wilson of Wichita Falls. Grandkids Ricky Hill, Sherilyn Hill-Borja and Pedro Borja, Brandi and Josh Mann of Leander, Texas, Dustin Kerr of Fort Worth Texas. Elizabeth Hill of Southlake, Texas. Great grandkids Jace and Judson Mann, Tarah Hill, Em and Ellie Borja. Special friends Leslie Haynes Shanks, and Gary Haynes.
Visitation will be at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home at 6-8pm on Monday, November 12th.
Services will be at 12pm on Tuesday, November 13 at Hampton Vaughan. A private family burial will be held prior to services. Memorial Service will be officiated by Larry Spradley. Eulogy by Josh Mann.
We will miss him.
In tribute, send any desired contributions to Wichita Falls Boys & Girls Club, or Hospice of Wichita Falls.
