Fred I. Smith, 85, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014 in Wichita Falls. Fred was a loving, kind, and unselfish husband, father, grandfather and friend. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bob McCartney and Chaplain Susan Lanford officiating. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 6:30 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Smith was born July 5, 1928 in Frederick, Oklahoma to Annie G. and Jim Z. Smith. He graduated from Frederick High School and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He received his Masters degree in Education from North Texas State.
Fred served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955. While enlisted, he met and married Salina (Sally) Clark in 1953. In 1957, their only child, Brenda Kay was born. After Sally’s death in 1985, Fred married Vicki Vaughn and they have been married 27 years.
Mr. Smith was employed by the WFISD for 33 years. He began his career as a math teacher at Austin Grade School, served as Principal at Bowie Elementary, Washington Elementary of Flood St., Washington Elementary and retired while Principal at Cunningham Elementary. He was well known for his many years of coaching his students in gymnastics, many times performing at football and basketball halftimes.
Fred loved coaching and working with kids. He served as an SBOA basketball official, a Boy’s Club football coach, volunteered with Senior Olympics and ran the clock at Memorial for 43 years- since its opening in 1970 He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Sally; two brothers, Zack and John; sister, Iva and a granddaughter, Keren Ginnings.
Survivors are his wife, Vicki of Wichita Falls; daughter, Brenda Kay Ginnings and husband, Marke of Wichita Falls; two granddaughters, Melissa Redwine and husband Brady of Dallas and Kimberly Ginnings and fiancé Garrett Wootten of Killen, TX; grandson, Zach Ginnings of Tyler, TX; two great-granddaughters, Emily and Elena Redwine of Dallas and a brother, Jim Smith of Vernon.
