illness. A memorial service celebrating Evelyn’s life will be held on June 1 at 11:00 in the
chapel of Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home. Following the memorial service, the
family will receive visitors until 1:00 p.m.
Evelyn was born on February 28, 1927, in Comanche, Oklahoma to Killen Mathis Moore and
Nell McKinnon Moore. She was a graduate of Vernon High School and earned her B.B.A.
from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta. She
worked for Humble Oil and enjoyed travel to Cuba and Guatemala before marrying Earl
Dean Staten on June 10, 1955. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage, until Earl’s death in 2005.
Evelyn lived most of her adult life in Wichita Falls before moving to Dallas in 2016, where
she received extraordinarily loving care at The Tradition Lovers Lane. She was an active and
long-time member of First United Methodist Church and the Winsome Sunday School
class. She was also active in the community as a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood,
Cotillion Club, and Women’s Junior/Senior Forum.
Evelyn enjoyed learning new things her entire life, including golf from her husband, tennis
when her daughters began playing, painting, ceramics, knitting, Spanish, and Bible Study
Fellowship, and many other things. She was a Master Naturalist and loved being with her
animals, from her horse and cat as a child, to her beloved dogs, Tammy, Bevo and Bailey.
Throughout her life, Evelyn was a committed and lifelong friend to many people, including
her decades long “Monday group”, Wednesday “gathering” at the 19th hole, and Saturday
“Gene’s hamburger” group. Her commitment to others, whether family or friends, was
always selfless, unwavering, and full of love. She also loved sunflowers, British humor,
asparagus, listening to Paul Harvey, and Erma Bombeck.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Nell and Killen Moore, and her husband, Earl.
She is survived by her daughters: Sharon VanAmburgh (Robert) of Dallas, Texas; and Janet
Chastain (Lee) of Austin, Texas. She also has four grandchildren: Lisa VanAmburgh Link
(Taylor) of Denver; Grace VanAmburgh of Dallas; Madeline Chastain of Nashville; and
Daniel Chastain of Austin. She has one great grandchild, Wyatt Link.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of one’s
choosing.
