He was born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas. He graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1958. He earned his Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow and was President of the DeMolay. He married Wanda Lee Wade on August 26, 1961. He graduated from Midwestern State University in 1965. After graduating from Midwestern, he received an ROTC Army Commission and was stationed in Germany. In 1969, he served in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star as an advisor to the South Vietnamese military. After serving in the Army, he worked for State Farm Insurance for 30 years and retired in 1999. He loved nature, traveling, camping, deer hunting, photography, and watching the Dallas Cowboys.
He is proceeded in death by his parents and brother Dan Smith. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Wanda Smith, sister Gloria Dicken and husband Larry, nieces Stacy Moore-Helms and Pam Tims, nephews Glen Dicken, Ron and Richard Wade, and great-nephews Coleton and Chase Helms, and Preston Dicken.
