Byron was born December 16, 1959 in Bowie, TX to Phillip Alsup and Eva Eloise New. He was a Class of 78 graduate at Gosnell High School in Gosnell, Arkansas and received his Bachelor of Music degree from Midwestern State University in May of 1991.
He was a beloved music instructor and band director for 25 years, sharing his passion for music and his wealth of "dad jokes" at Grandview ISD from 1991-1996, Wichita Falls High School from 1996-2005, and Holliday ISD from 2005-2016. Among his many accomplishments, he assisted Melanie Hadderton in taking the Holliday Eagle Band to six state competitions. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu honorary international fraternity, on February 13, 2016 at the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio.
Inductees must have taught at least ten years and have a history of excellence in teaching and service to music education. Byron (aka "Mr. A") hung up his director baton after 25 years of teaching in May of
2016. Post retirement he remained actively involved in music, writing half time shows for high schools across the area and as Region 2 Music Coordinator. He was also an accomplished composer with several pieces published and still used today in UlL competitions throughout Texas. Along with his love for music he also had a great appreciation for sports, feeding his competitive spirit throughout his life with football, softball, bowling, golf, tennis, and his most recent obsession with the fast-growing sport of pickleball.
Byron will be terribly missed by all the lives he's touched not just throughout his music career but by his family and lifelong friends. He is survived by his children, Michael Alsup and wife Jessica, Brandi Fletcher and husband Jewel, Amanda Wynn and husband Sean, Jon Alsup and wife Jessica, and Mason Alsup and wife McKenzie; sister Eva Walters and husband Herb, brother Jack Alsup, and brother Chris New and wife Debra; grandchildren, Gavin, Samantha, Thomas, Damein, Egan, Vivien, and Aiden; great grandchildren Lucian and Helena; best friends and pickleball crew Carey and Melanie Hadderton, and Cathy Rudy.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and stepfather Jon New.
Visitation will be 4-6 PM Thursday January 23, 2025 at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Funeral Home in Wichita Falls, TX.
