Beckie Sherman, 83, of Wichita Falls died Tuesday, June 12, 2012 in Wichita Falls. Services have been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Shiloh Baptist Church officiated by grandson, Reverend Dannon Newman and Reverend Clarence Hightower, Sr. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at the church.
The late, Hosea and Mabel Smith welcomed the birth of their daughters, Beckie and identical twin, Rebecca on May 19, 1929 who were the second birth of eight daughters. The Smith Family reared their children in the Ash community of Crockett, TX. Beckie truly loved the Lord and faithfully began her service to Him at an early age as a result of her Christ filled spirited mother, Mabel. She was baptized at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Beckie attended high school at both William High School in Crockett and later Booker T. Washington in Arizona. While in school, she enjoyed a range of sports from her participation on the basketball team or sometimes as a spectator. Fishing and running track were her other favorite sports.
Years later, Beckie’s marriage to Nathan Sherman in 1946 welcomed the birth of their five children. Choica resides in Wichita Falls. Helen resides in Converse, TX. Thompsine of Missouri City, TX was deceased December 2004. Randle also resides in Wichita Falls. Tawni takes up residence in Dallas, TX. Along with the five children are nine grandchildren, twelve great grand-children and one great great-grandchild. Also left to mourn her death are her sisters, Emma Lee Walker, Rebecca Jordan and Caroline Smith all of Anchorage, Alaska; Fannie Mae Harpole of Portland, Organ; Tina Reed of Dallas, TX; Lovie Prosser of Fort Worth, TX and Flora Willette of Converse, TX. Other survivors include her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Henriette Sherman Gipson and Walter Lee Sherman, Jr. both of Houston, TX. She is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
During her service as a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for over 40 years, she held the following positions in the Adult Senior Choir – Secretary and later contact person.
As per the Minister of Music, it was stated, “I want to do this wholeheartedly.” And that she did. Sister Sherman offers to the Shiloh Baptist Church four generations from the Sherman Family; Sister Sherman, Choica, Ingrid and Makenzi.
Having been employed as a direct care staff at the Wichita Falls State Hospital, she retired after 31 years of service. Her accomplishments and awards include from the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Wichita Falls State Hospital - Employee of the Month, March 1991; Perfect Attendance; Recognition of Successful Completion a) Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior, Level 2 b) Specialist I Training; Department Medication Program a) 80 hour course and recognized proficiency examination and administration of medications b) Certificate of Appreciation for 5 years of Meritorious Service. From the American Heart Association – Attendant I – In Closed Chest Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation was another award.
