Born in Tenafly, NJ he was the grandson of Henry Palmer, the first Mayor of Tenafly. He attended Storm King School Cornwall-on-the-Hudson, NY, and Williams College, Williamstown, MA, graduating in 1939 with a degree in Economics.
He met and married Elizabeth Mae Tucker while they were stationed at Camp Shelby, MS in 1945. In 1946 they moved to Tenafly where they raised their two children David (Sally Fisher) and Hugh (Phoebe Myhrum). He was a longtime Real Estate and Insurance Agent with offices in Englewood, NJ. He was an active community member throughout his life. He was the Drive Chairman Tenafly Community Chest. He served as a Trustee of the Tenafly Board of Education. He was a former president of the Tenafly Rotary Club. He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of Trustees.
Nelson was an athlete who enjoyed winning even if it meant beating his young grandchildren at golf or tennis. He had a strong sense of family and spent many hours gathering information, and writing about his family history. He also enjoyed spending time on Cape Cod during the summers, and loved sailing.
In 2002 he moved to Crestwood Manor to help care for Elizabeth who died shortly after moving in. Nelson was also very active in Crestwood Manor community and had many friends who he enjoyed playing golf, bridge and poker with.
He is survived by four grandchildren: Benjamin Clark (Allison), Matthew Clark (Karen), Heather Clark, and Sommer Clark Evert (John), six great grandchildren: Nathan, Olivia, Aiyana, Lucy, Cyrus and Cassidy.
His family wishes to extend their gratitude to the entire community of Crestwood Manor, residents and staff, for their unfailing attention, and tender care.
