John was born in the Inwood section of Manhattan, New York City.
He married Madeline Kovach of Northampton, Pennsylvania in September 1941. They lived in the Bronx, NY and Little Ferry, NJ before moving to Crestwood Village IV in Whiting, NJ in 1980.
John served his country in the military for 3 1/2 years during World War
II as a Sergeant in the Army Ordinance Division and received an
honorable discharge in 1945.
John was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking and was a
Certified Internal Auditor. After 45 years of service, he retired as
Regional Assistant Auditor for the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company
in NYC.
John and Madeline became members of Christ Lutheran Church in 1980. He
was active in various functions including usher, teller, lector, tape
ministry and council member. John was a dedicated volunteer for many
years in the Crestwood CARES organization as a dial-a-ride, wheel chair
van and meals-on-wheels driver.
John is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Madeline Kress, a son
John Roger Kress and daughter-in-law Anne, a daughter Elizabeth Shashoua
and son-in-law Edward. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and their
spouses: Andrew Kress and Jennifer Ritchey, Adam and Amy Kress,
Karen Shashoua and Andrew Guttell, Robert Shashoua and Francie Maguire.
John has 9 great-grandchildren: Maya Shashoua, Sammy Guttell, Evan
Guttell, Matthew Kress, Peter Kress, John Alexander Kress, Roan Maguire
Shashoua, Lalo Maguire Shashoua and Henry Kress. John's pride and joy
were his family.
A memorial service will be held at the Christ Lutheran Church, 40
Schoolhouse Road, Whiting, NJ 08759 on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 10am
with a repast luncheon at the church hall after the service. Internment
will follow at 2pm at the Brig. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, NJ under the
direction of Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Road,
Whiting, NJ.
