Mary Ellen Mathie, age 72, of Commerce Township, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Huron Valley Hospital. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Dale; her three children: Craig (Anna) Mathie, Karen (Don) Young, and Kristel (Ben) Wolfe; her seven grandchildren: Joshua, Luke, Joseph, Ethan, Lilly, Layla, and Ava; her three siblings: Peggy (Joe) Chemello, Kathy Winkeljohn, and Tom Winkeljohn; and her nephew, Scott (Sarah) Chemello, and their two children Julia and Adam.
Mary Ellen was born May 13, 1950, in Detroit, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles and Mary (Liening) Winkeljohn. She was introduced to Dale Mathie at Raleigh House many years ago, and the two quickly began dating, fell in love, and were eventually married in 1973. Mary Ellen and Dale shared forty-nine wonderful years together. Throughout her life, Mary Ellen worked as an executive secretary for Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline Company. In addition, Mary Ellen spent time as an assistant editor at Construction Association of Michigan. In addition to her career, Mary Ellen was a wonderful wife and mother to her family and greatly enjoyed watching her children grow up. Before her retirement in 2020, Mary Ellen enjoyed working in the gift shop of Botsford Hospital in Farmington.
Strong in her Catholic faith, Mary Ellen was a devoted parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church in White Lake for ten years, and at St. Gerald Catholic Church in Farmington for thirty-nine years prior. In her free time, she could always be found reading a book, crocheting one of her many projects, baking in her kitchen, or spending time with her grandchildren, who she loved so much. Some of Mary Ellen’s fondest memories were made on a cruise to Alaska with her husband Dale. She was a wonderful woman who will be greatly missed.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, February 24, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9086 Hutchins Road, White Lake, 48386. Mary Ellen’s family will receive visitors on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at the Union Lake Chapel of the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 1233 Union Lake Road, White Lake, 48386, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, and again at church on Friday, from 10:00 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. A burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
