William Reuben Squire was born February 21, 1921 at home near Yampa, Colorado, the first of three children of Reuben and Edith Squire. His childhood and youth were spent entirely in Routt County, Colorado, with the exception of one year in Long Beach, California. He graduated from Yampa High School in 1939 and enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1940. He served throughout World War II at various bases in the US and Panama Canal Zone. After his discharge in 1945 he moved to Denver and began an apprenticeship as an electrician, his occupation until his retirement in 1986. In January 1948 he married Frances Eileen Sikes, and their only daughter, Barbara, was born the following December. Frances suffered from rheumatic heart disease for most of her life and sadly predeceased him in 1976. He is survived by his daughter Barbara (Terry) Anderson, granddaughters Christa (Christopher) Saxon, Cara (Jim) Katzer, and Laura (John) Gabrielson; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Bill was always busy working with his hands, whether gardening, building, or doing mechanical repairs. He could build anything, fix anything, make anything, and he was always willing to use his gifts in the service of his family, his friends, and his church. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, boating and fishing. He remained very active and independent until his late 80's, when increasing physical and mental frailty required him to trade his home of 56 years for assisted living.
He will be greatly missed and remembered as a quiet, unassuming man of faith and integrity.
