Virgil was a member of the American Legion Carpenters Union, and a number of bowling leagues. His several bowling trophies are among his many personal achievements. Virgil's additional achievements include his Honorable discharge from the Marines and Army Air Corp, and his Journeyman in Carpentry. He was an expert rifleman and earned the American Defense Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, European African Ribbon, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Sharp Shooter.
Besides bowling, Virgil loved rocks and rock collecting. He hunted for rocks, including gold, and had a mine with two others. Virgil also enjoyed searching for hidden treasures with a geigercounter, hunting, camping, and golfing. His favorite vacation spots were Las Vegas, Nevada, California - especially the Redwoods, Buena Vista, Colorado, and Kansas.
Virgil is survived by his sister, Wyneta Clendenning, of Pueblo, CO; his sons, John Simon, of Hanford, CA and Gene Bird, of Mountain View, CO; his daughters, Vivian Prince, of Charlotte, NC, Dona Schick, of Lakewood, CO, and Vickie Hildebrandt, Wheat Ridge, CO and his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
