Sarah Ellen Shaw Mencimer Lockett, 99, of Denver, Colorado, passed from this life just days before her 100th birthday. Ellen’s family and friends will gather at 12:00 p.m. on August 2nd at Crown Hill Mortuary Chapel of Peace in Wheat Ridge, CO for a Celebration of Life Service; this would have been Ellen’s 100th birthday. Committal Services will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Mizpah Cemetery in Platteville, CO. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary.
Ellen was born on August 2nd, 1915 to John S. Shaw and Cora V. Cornell on a farm in Brighton, Colorado. She attended Brighton Schools, graduating from Brighton High School in 1932. Ellen retired at age 72 from Van Schaack & Co. where she worked for many years as a certified real estate closer. Ellen was a long time member of the Business and Professional Women Federation (B.P.W.). Ellen's years of holding office at her Denver East Chapter culminated in her election as Colorado State Federation President in 1985.
Surviving Ellen are two daughters, Diann Mencimer (Jim) Amick of Yuma, AZ and Coreen Mencimer (John) Kinnear of Arlington, TX along with seven grandsons; Brent (Bonnie) Amick of Loveland, CO, Kendal Amick of Fountain Hills, AZ, Shawn (Jody) Amick of Escondido, CA, Bradley (Jamye) Amick of Tucson, AZ, Chris (Sharon) Kinnear of Arlington TX, Tim (Ji) Kinnear of Costa Mesa, CA, David (Kim) Kinnear of Edmond, OK and 18 great grandchildren. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cora Shaw and by her first grandson, James Amick (Jimmy) of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Ellen enjoyed traveling and spending time with her daughters and their families as well as the many life long friends she made through the years. She especially loved celebrating her birthdays and rightly so! Ellen loved life and lived each day to its fullest, always dressed to the nines and never without her lipstick. Even at the age of 99 she continued to dress to impress. She could be a girlie girl and yet at the same time keep up with her eight grandsons and their mischievous charades. She was quick witted and could always make us laugh.
Grandma Ellen, also referred to as Mimi, leaves with us many cherished memories and keepsakes from the hundreds of family photographs she has taken over the years along with her annual Christmas letters she has sent out since 1974 without fail; both documenting life through her nonjudgmental eyes and heart. Grandma Ellen’s physical absence will be missed tremendously. However, we know, her sweet and fun loving spirit will always be with us.
