Ruben A. Valdez was born on January 27, 1937, to Antonio and Delicia Valdez in Trinidad, Colorado. He was the youngest of nine children. He passed away peacefully at home on October 1, 2019, with his family by his side.
Ruben married the love of his life, Virginia Segura, on February 2, 1956. They raised their three children in Denver, Colorado.
Ruben was known for his career as a public servant, state legislator and respected lobbyist. Ruben was most proud of his work in the areas of education, civil rights and mentoring young Latinos entering the political realm. He held many titles such as Speaker of the House, Mr. Speaker, the Honorable, Presidential Appointee, etc., but without a doubt the titles he revered the most were Dad, Grandpa, Uncle, and friend.
Ruben was a diehard Denver Broncos fan holding season tickets since the 1960’s. He attended Colorado Rockies games as often as he could, starting with their very first day in Denver and he especially loved Opening Day each season. He enjoyed a competitive game of poker with friends, high stake tournaments in Vegas, and dollar card night with the family. He enjoyed the view from a cruise ship deck chair and walking warm sandy beaches at each port. Ruben attended many a formal banquet but enjoyed a bowl of freshly made pinto beans more than anything. His wit and wisdom were a hallmark and his compliments were genuine.
Ruben was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Virginia, and his eight brothers and sisters, Ruth, Pacifico, Paul, Nora, Albert, Leandro, Louie and Elsie. Ruben’s pal Rusty, his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, joined Ruben in heaven on October 4, 2019.
Ruben is survived by three children Ruben(J.R.), Peggy and Trish and seven grandchildren, Brandy, Amber, April, Jay, Miranda, Selena and Jack, along with their spouses, and hundreds of nieces and nephews. Family was everything to Ruben and he held each family member in his heart, appreciating their visits, texts and reunions. Ruben’s bright smile while with family said it all.
Ruben was laid to rest with his beloved Virginia at Olinger Crown Hill Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
A celebration of Ruben’s larger-than-life will be held on October 16, 2019, 10:00 a.m. at Coors Field. Please enter through Gate C. Coors Field parking lots will be open and available.
