Growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, he attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School, St. Paul Technical High School and the University of Minnesota. He spent his US Army service training in northern California and was then sent to work in Alaska as a surveyor and cartographer for the 551st Engineer Base Survey Company.
Bob met his wife Carmen on a blind date in Los Angeles in 1953. They were happily married for 69 years and have two daughters, Nina and Amy.
In 1996, Bob retired from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service after 36 years as a cartographer. He created topographical maps for many National Wildlife Refuges, including his favorite, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Alaska. This 19 million acre refuge is home to some of his favorite animals, the moose, caribou, wolf and polar bear. He worked for many years mapping the lands involved in the Alaskan Native Claims Settlement Act. Closer to home, he worked on maps for the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, home to burrowing owls and buffalo.
Bob loved the outdoors and nature throughout his life. His interest in the protection and conservation of wild lands and animals began during his youth. He enjoyed a lifetime of fishing, hiking, canoeing and camping.
His hobbies included woodworking, home improvement projects, growing vegetables, planting trees, working in his large backyard garden and baking his famous cinnamon rolls and delicious cookies. Bob enjoyed traveling with family members to beautiful places such as Mexico, Italy, Hawaii and the Grand Canyon. He loved historic trains and ships and was a member of the Rocky Mountain Shipwrights, a model ship building club. He made a special trip to England a few years ago and saw the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where he visited the famous ship HMS Victory.
Bob was a kind, caring, supportive and fun husband and father. His optimistic outlook was admired by many. He was very much loved and will be dearly missed.
Bob is survived by his wife and daughters, his many in-laws, nieces and nephews. His funeral mass will be held at St Joseph Church in Golden, Colorado at 10 a.m. on August 23, 2022, followed by his burial at the Golden Cemetery.
