Her hobbies included gardening, reading, playing mahjong, bridge, and she enjoyed gambling. She loved to golf and traveled around the country playing many of its top courses. She also was a member of the Applewood Golf Course Ladies Club. Mary had the distinct honor of scoring two holes in one during her lifetime. She also was an avid bowler and belonged to several leagues. She was a member of the ladies Elks and enjoyed socializing at events with her many friends. She was a gifted ballroom dancer. Mary loved to bake and cook. She enjoyed the many meals spent together with family and friends on holidays, birthdays, and countless other occasions.
She is survived by her children: John Spiess (Barbara), Janet O’Neal (Rick), Robert Spiess (Valerie) and Thomas Spiess (Rebecca); grandchildren: Sara, Aron, and Katherine Spiess, Matthew O’Neal and Kaitlin Halliday, Madeline and Griffin Spiess, Zada, Vivian, and Genevieve Spiess; great grandchildren: Aron and Adeava Spiess, Nora Mead, and John Halliday; sister Margaret Burin Prijatel; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John, to whom she had been married for 53 years before his death on May 13, 2004, her son, Michael, who passed away on December 30, 1977, at the age of 24, her sister, Rose, brothers, Sam and Augustus, and parents, Sam and Teresa.
Memorial service will be held at St. Bernadette Parish in Lakewood, Colorado on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 11:00 am. Reception to follow at the church.
