Mary Lynn Thompson left this world to be with her Savior on January 12, 2024. She was born on July 6, 1932 to Jewel and Lynn Ingram in Limestone County, Texas where she spent her early childhood years. The family moved to Houston, and she graduated from Sam Houston High School in Houston, Texas as valedictorian of her class when only 16 years old.
While in high school she met and married the love of her life, Tommy Thompson. Tommy ‘s work with Chevron Oil Company moved them to El Paso and then to Denver, Colorado where they raised their two young daughters, Shelly and Callie. Both native Texans fell in love with the mountains, and in the summertime, Mary Lynn was frequently on the bank of a river watching Tommy fly fish or was busy helping him with his garden and cooking what he had grown. Once winter arrived, she enjoyed her time with Tommy cross country skiing and other winter fun. Mary Lynn had a knack for decorating, and she and Tommy had a lovely home, often hosting family and friends for dinner or any other meal where people showed up. She served as the secretary of their church, First Southern Baptist Church of Westminster, Colorado for over 20 years. Sadly, Tommy passed away when Mary Lynn was just 45 years of age.
Mary Lynn became involved in Bible Study Fellowship and found her calling in teaching God’s word. She moved to Tyler, Texas in 1985 and became the teaching leader of the women’s night class in BSF until 2002. After retiring from teaching with BSF, she taught a couple’s Sunday School class at Green Acres Baptist Church called Thompson’s Boomers. She made a lasting impact on the lives she touched during her Tyler years.
Mary Lynn was an exceptional woman and will be dearly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She loved Jesus, her family, and her friends with a heart the size of Texas. She had many talents and was an exceptional seamstress. Her granddaughters and great-granddaughters were known for wearing gorgeous hand-smocked dresses made by their Mimi. She loved to teach others to sew and often had groups of women at her home sewing or learning to “crazy quilt.”
Most of all, Mary Lynn spent her life sharing the love and knowledge of Jesus with others and serving as a wonderful example of trusting God. It is instilled in those who knew her best that God can be trusted and that He is faithful.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jewel (Crowell) and Lynn Ingram, her sisters Annie Ingram and Doris Evans, and her beloved Tommy, who was waiting eagerly for her arrival to her heavenly home. She is survived by daughter Shelly and Chuck Winter, Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Callie and David Northcutt, Tyler, Texas; sister Sharon Foster, Houston, Texas; grandchildren Brad (Kristin) Winter, Lindsay (Mike) Keough, Patrick Taylor, Graham Northcutt, and Mary Ellen Northcutt, and great grandchildren Winter, Ryan, Gray, Kyle and Kate Lynn Keough and Brennan and Carson Winter. She is also survived by nieces Kim Evans, Kay Amendola, Kristen Campbell, Amy Segrest, nephew Tommy Blakeman and their families, and brother-in-law Phil (Mary Ann) Evans. She will be greatly missed by her family and by numerous precious friends.
