At Mickey’s 94th birthday party which we celebrated at the Legacy Rehab center where she was making a full recovery from her second fractured hip surgery, we asked her what the key to longevity was. She sat with her little birthday crown on and thought for a minute … then responded, “You just don’t think about things too much.” This was her secret weapon. She was a positive thinker, one who did not dwell on things, did not analyze or scrutinize. She would simply accept what was ahead of her and carry on to the best of her ability. And her abilities were many… she was resilient, courageous, joyous, loyal and loving.
Mickey’s mother, Maria de San Juan, passed during her birth and tasked her Grandma -Fructosa, and Father- Louis Aragon and Uncles to raise her and her sister Linda in Canyon City Colorado. Her father and uncles worked in the iron ore mines in Gilman County and came home on the weekends. The two sisters grew up being very self-sufficient in a loving family.
Mickey was born in Santa Rosa New Mexico, graduated from Canyon City High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943-1945, first in the Intelligence Division and then as a sergeant in the Para-Trooper Division. She was Honorably Discharged in 1945 from Paris Island, South Carolina, Reenlisted in 1947 and discharged again in 1949. Where upon she got a job in Denver and attended Barnes Business College. Married George (Scotty) Barnes
Mickey loved a party! She was happiest around friends and family. She loved activities like riding bikes, horseback riding, ice skating and bowling. I’m pretty sure that’s why she fell in love with our Dad -George (Scotty) Barnes. He was the life of the party as most know! They lived in a small house on Garfield Street in Denver and then moved to Broomfield where they started their family. They had four children, from oldest to youngest; Andrew, Elizabeth, Scott and Craig. Shortly after having Craig they moved the family of six to Green Mountain and the home of their dreams where Mickey worked as a teacher’s assistant for the Jefferson county school district while raising the clan.
Mickey was blessed with 9 Grand Kids and 9 Great Grand Kids.
Mickey lived a full, abundant and healthy life right up to the time she crossed over to Heaven to be with Jesus. During her last days she continued to love all and make us laugh. She will live in our hearts and memories forever as one of the sweetest, beautiful souls ever to grace the earth.
