Lary was born in McCook, Nebraska on March 2, 1936, to Milray Steinke and Harley Cahill and was raised by his grandparents, Olga and Harry Cahill. When he was 14, he moved to Denver. He graduated from North High School in 1954 and continued his education at the Colorado School of Mines where he received a degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1959. He became a member of the Program for Senior Executives in The Sloan School of Management at MIT in 1980.
Right after graduating from high school, Lary met Jackie Carlson, and they were married on May 26, 1957. They celebrated their 67th anniversary in May.
While attending the Colorado School of Mines Lary was in ROTC. After graduating he earned the rank of second lieutenant and spent six months of active duty in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. This was followed by 8 years of Army reserves.
Lary began working for ASARCO, Inc. in 1960. His first position took he and Jackie to Tacoma, Washington where their son Brian was born. Four years later they left Tacoma for Tormey, California. Their daughter, Julie, was born in 1965. Next, the whole family moved to El Paso, Texas where they spent four years. In 1970 his job at ASARCO took the family to live in Morris Plains, New Jersey so that Lary could commute to the corporate office in New York City and work as an ore buyer. After four years, they moved to Kearny, Arizona where he was plant manager for six years. In 1980 their final move for ASARCO took them back to New Jersey and the New York City commute as assistant to the Vice President He retired in 1992. He and Jackie lived in Ocean View, New Jersey before moving to Golden, Colorado in 2008.
Lary enjoyed playing golf, gardening, woodworking and reading. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church where he served as an elder and a deacon. He and Jackie had numerous travelling adventures. They spent many winters in Tucson, Arizona with friends and family.
Lary is survived by his wife Jackie, son Brian (Cheryl), daughter Julie (Brian), 6 grandchildren: Shaun (Lauren), Matt, Megan(Daniel), Luke (Olivia), Paul and Eric, 4 great granddaughters: Kortney, Whitney, Athena and Clementine, brother Terry, beloved nephews, nieces, family and friends.
Lary is preceded in death by his twin brother Gary.
A memorial service is being planned for March 2025 at Olinger Crown Hill Cemetery in Colorado.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Exempla Lutheran Hospice at Collier Center or the Wheat Ridge Presbyterian Church. The family of Lary wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Collier Hospice for their compassionate care of Lary and support of his family during his final days.
