August 3, 1929 - October 14, 2023
Herbert Hajime Maruyama, affectionately known as "Buster," was born into an extraordinary family in Hilo, Hawaii, on August 3, 1929, to his proud parents, Nobuo and Nobuku Maruyama. Surrounded by the love of his family, he peacefully departed this world on October 14, 2023, in the comfort of his home, a place he had cherished for more than 50 years.
Growing up in the vibrant community of Hilo, Hawaii, Herb shared his childhood with his younger brother, Donald, and sister, Marian. His early years were shaped by the love and guidance of his parents, and he developed a deep passion for baseball, a sport that became an integral part of his life. His father's sporting goods store not only provided Herb with the tools of his beloved game but also instilled in him the values of dedication and teamwork.
After graduating from Hilo High School, Herb pursued higher education, attending the University of Hawaii before transferring to Northwestern University in 1949. Baseball remained a constant passion, but in 1951, after a year of playing at Northwestern, Herb made the heartfelt decision to devote himself fully to the field of medicine.
On August 30, 1952, Herb married his lifelong best friend, Ruby Ebesugawa, in Chicago, Illinois. Their union was a testament to profound love and companionship, and Ruby remained his "soulmate" throughout their incredible journey together, including a marriage of more than 70 years. Herb graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1955, marking the beginning of a fulfilling and impactful career in sports medicine and orthopedics.
Herb's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to medicine, his deep love for his family, and his enduring passion for baseball. He practiced medicine with compassion and skill, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those he cared for. His straightforward demeanor and kind heart endeared him to his patients and colleagues alike.
He is survived by his younger brother, Dr. Donald Maruyama, sister-in-law Satsuki "Sachi" Ebesugawa, children: H.H. Maruyama, Jan Maruyama, Eric Maruyama, and Susan Maruyama; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Although Herb achieved remarkable success in his career, his greatest achievement was the love and support he provided to his family. His legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, and all those whose lives he touched.
