Gary Allen Sauer was born on January 1, 1943 to Rosina and Samuel Sauer. He was the first baby born in Denver that year. Gary passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and his dog Gracie on April 21, 2022.
Gary spent his childhood years in North Denver and attended St Catherine’s Elementary School and Holy Family High School. Gary decided he wanted to be a teacher, and attended Regis College for one year and then finished his degree at Colorado Teacher’s College (now University of Northern Colorado). He later got a Master's degree in Educational Administration from California State College, and a Doctor of Education from University of Northern Colorado.
Gary taught mathematics in California for 8 years, and then moved back to Colorado. His career included being principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, gifted and talented coordinator, and many years of teaching mathematics in Denver Public Schools.
Gary was in an automobile accident in 1989 and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was never able to work again, but through hard work and determination he was able to do many of the things he loved including riding a bike, skiing, and traveling. He particularly enjoyed walking his dogs throughout the Belmar and Addenbrooke areas in Lakewood.
Gary wanted to be remembered for his jokes and for trying to make everyone happy. He would also like to be remembered as someone who would persevere in the face of frustration, and as someone who worked hard to overcome obstacles.
Gary is survived by his wife, Becky, his children, Anne (Ned) Clark, Paul (Tanya) Sauer, Brian (Maria) Sauer, and Matthew Sauer, grandchildren Kevin, Ryan, Meredith and Ethan, and great grandchild Dante.
A funeral service will be held at Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, 920 Kipling Street, Lakewood, Colorado on Saturday, May 14 at 10:00 AM.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to: Holy Shepherd Lutheran Church, Craig Hospital Foundation, or The National Sports Center for the Disabled.
