Betty was born in Rockford, Illinois, to Edgar and Louise Kaney Hudson. As an infant, she went to live with her Aunt Elizabeth “Dee” and Uncle Guy Livesay. She stayed close to her birth family, but was raised as an only child by her adoring adoptive parents.
She graduated from Quincy College in Illinois with a degree in social science and history.
She married Robert “Bob” Flanders. Twins Jean and Joan were born in 1953, and John in 1956.
They moved often due to Bob’s work in a finance company, settling finally in Lakewood, Colorado in 1967. Bob died of a heart attack in 1975. Betty lived the rest of her life, from age 44, as an independent woman. She had obtained her master’s degree, and continued a teaching career. She found her professional home in the English department of Alameda High School. She taught there from 1969-1996. She loved her students, encouraging them to always do their best and reach for their dreams. Many of them remember her fondly and with gratitude.
A friend once told Betty that she was born with a happy heart. Her life reflected that.
A family celebration of life was held while Betty could take part and enjoy it. She is survived by daughters Jean Boggs (Bill) and Joan Flanders (Greg Fisher) son John (Priscilla), and grandchildren Tyler Boggs, Kristina Hudson, Kellen Flanders, and Kinsey Lucido (Jack). No memorial service is planned. In Betty’s memory, please enjoy reading a book.
