Dearl James “DJ” Adamson was born to James David & Dora Bell Dowdy Adamson on February 17, 1925 in Minneola, KS and died on September 02, 2018 in Wheat Ridge, CO at the age of 93. Dearl, along with his parents, brother and sister, moved to Colorado in 1926 to find a better life after farm steading in Kansas. They opened Adamson Groceries located at 38th and Wolfe streets, right across from Elitch Gardens.
During his high school summer months, he worked at Elitch Gardens on the Spit Fire as a ride operator. It was there that he met his future wife Mabel Elaine Berry, as she was working in the Trocadero Ballroom playing the saxophone. He graduated from North High School in 1943.
Right after high school, Dearl joined the Merchant Marines where he served as a 2nd Officer on the Liberty Ship in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans during WWII.
When DJ left the Merchant Marines he and his high school sweetheart Mabel were married on October 12, 1946 at the Highlands Methodist Church in Denver, CO. Together they raised 4 children before Mabel’s death in 1974 from breast cancer. He never remarried.
Dearl became a Sales Representative for various home-furnishing companies in the Denver area. He also took over the Mother Goose Preschool that his wife Mabel had successfully built. He then sold the business in the mid 1980’s. Dearl retired after a long and successful career.
He was an active member of Lakewood Country Club and he loved to play golf and cards with his buddies. He was very passionate about his golf game, he even enjoyed 2 holes in ones at Lakewood Country Club.
He loved to travel, and he went all around the world using Ports of Calls & he took several Mystery Trips.
His mother and father, his wife Mabel, his oldest son Gary, his brother Milo and his sister Zita preceded Dearl in death.
He is survived by his sons Kent Douglas (Candice), Gregg Allen, his daughter, Carol Elaine Jones (Mike Jones), his niece Janice Adamson Brown (Eldon), a grandson Logan Jones and a granddaughter Shannon Jones.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 10th, 2018 at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary & Cemetery located at 7777 W. 29th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Dinner reception immediately following the service. Pop really loved color so please wear bright colors if you can attend.
