Amy Lynn Smith Dowd graced this world with her presence on October 6, 1973 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Born to Sherry and Junior Smith, Amy was dearly loved by her 3 year old big brother, Mark David, her grandparents, LaFerne & Elmo Smith & Lona & Rich Ashmore and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.
From the moment she was born it was evident that she would have a personality that would light up the world. Amy was a very happy child who always had a big smile on her face and had the cutest dimples.
Amy’s childhood in Tahlequah, Oklahoma was full of love and family. She loved her baby dolls and much as she did her brother’s Lego’s and trucks. Often she would start out in a frilly dress and in a matter of minutes her lace socks would be falling down and the bows on her dresses would be untied as she tried to keep up with Mark! Wrestling matches with her brother and daddy were a regular occurrence.
When Amy was 5 the family moved to the country north of Tahlequah. Horses, go-karts, swimming and chasing fireflies became a part of the family life. Amy and Mark spent countless hours outside in the tire swing, playing in the woods and having great fun with their cousins and Grandview school friends. Amy loved spending time in the kitchen with mom baking cookies.
Amy accepted Jesus as her Savior when she was 7 years old and was baptized with her cousin, Michelle, at First Christian Church in Tahlequah. Amy loved being a worship leader for the church as a little girl and would help her mom with Vacation Bible School each summer. She lived her faith in a quiet way and let her actions do the talking.
Amy took dance lessons for many years and her love of dancing never stopped throughout her entire life. Always busy, Amy loved gymnastics, karate, cheerleading, showing horses, church youth group, motorcycles and sleepovers with friends and cousins. To her daddy’s delight, Amy was the Tahlequah Roundup Rodeo Queen when she was 10 years old.
In 1988 Amy’s life journey took her to Lakewood, Colorado when she, Mark and Mom married David Manson and gained a new brother, Joshua. She became a Green Mountain Ram and was on the GMHS gymnastics team.
During high school, Amy met the love of her life, Ronald Tyler Dowd! She was instantly smitten. Amy and Ron married on July 20, 1996 in a beautiful ceremony followed by an infamous reception that went on into the wee hours of the morning. Adding to the amazing love story was the birth of her two daughters, Haley Lynn on August 17, 1999 and Taylor Lynn on July 21, 2005.
As a family the Dowd’s loved being on their boat. Amy learned to wakeboard and surfing behind the boat was her next goal. Camping and cruising with family and friends were some of her favorite times.
To say that Amy was an amazing mother and wife would be an understatement. She dedicated her life to her family and was passionate about making lasting memories with her family. She considered her Haley and Taylor her greatest accomplishment in life.
Holidays were important to Amy and Christmas at the Dowd house was epic! There were always stockings stuffed to the brim for everyone and presents purchased by Amy with great thought.
Amy’s passion for cheerleading spread to Haley and Taylor. Amy became a cheer coach at Ready Set Cheer and touched the lives of hundreds of young ladies over the years. Her happy disposition and love of life was infectious and impacted both the cheerleaders and their parents. In 2014 Amy became an assistant coach for Haley’s squad at Green Mountain High School.
Supporting Ron’s love of car racing, Amy loved cheering him on in the stands at Colorado National Speedway. She thought racing was a great break for Ron from a house full of pink, sparkles and cheer bows!
Family was so important to Amy and she loved all of her siblings; Mark, Joshua, Justin, Natalie, Kaitlin, Amber, Lindsey, Rusty, and Christy.
Always positive, Amy faced cancer with determination and strength. She didn’t let it slow her down. She rocked bandanas and cool hats with her favorite clothing…running shorts, tee shirts and tennis shoes.
Amy leaves an amazing legacy for not only Ron, Haley, Taylor and her family but also to anyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She is a true blessing from God.
Amy’s greatest attribute was her unconditional love for all who came in contact with her. One to never hold anything against anyone, Amy exhibited her Savior’s love and forgiveness for people in all that she did. In her all too short life, Amy’s consistent passion made those who came across her path better than they were before.
Amy passed away on July 18, 2014 after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be Wed. from 4-8pm at Olinger Crown Hill.
