I have been grieving for you and your family all summer.  I saw Kate when she came to the high school to pick up a yearbook.  I am sorry we were unable to come to the Funeral because we were out of town.  I cannot imagine what you are going through, and have been praying for comfort from God above for all of you.  I don't know what I can do, but know that I will continue to pray.  Let me know if there is something I can do for you, even if it is just to talk or listen.  My heart is aching for you...

I’m Dave Hannaway. Jack Lucero and I coached Alex in basketball throughout his Elementary School years. He probably played about a hundred games for us at the Y & Gold Crown. I've been coaching Youth Sports for over 14 years and I'm always telling my players that I learn from them as well. What did I learn from Alex? Well for starters, when Alex walked in the gym for the first time, it took me no time to realize how athletic he was and also took me no time to realize, Alex didn’t like being told what to do. From this I learned that the way to work with Alex was thru Praise, Imagery and Encouragement. I adopted this as part of my coaching philosophy. 

I tell all my players to bring enthusiastic attitude and teamwork with purposeful, industrious, effort and they'll have fun, improve, learn and love what they're doing. Alex did this every time he walked through the doors of the gym. So much so, that we eventually got him to dribble with his left hand. 

Alex taught me (and this is in my philosophy); as a coach, don't expect more skills out of an athlete just because they are very athletic. Too many times and athlete pays little heed to skills and tries to use athleticism to compensate. The coaches’ job is to guide and instruct to use skills to enhance athleticism. Every time I read that, I think of Alex. Tammy, Jerry, I told you he was etched on my heart, mind and soul forever. 

Alex would light up the gym with that grin of his. It made me smile so many, many, times. He strived to be the best he could every time he walked on the court. Sure sometimes I would have to talk him out of being hard on himself. He expected so much from himself.  Jack & I would repeat over & over, just keep trying, success comes thru failure. And he grew, boy did he grow. So when you Step on the field, court, diamond, pitch, track or jump in the pool or ring: 

For Alex, “Grow, where you’re planted.”


Alex was this amazing light for our school. He was there for each and every person he walked by. Wheat ridge will never be the same without him for the classes of 2019-2021. He was such an amazing person, who everybody knew they could turn to in times of need, sucks he has to go the way he did. From all of us farmers, once a farmer, always a farmer! Represent Wheat Ridge well up there Alex, we love you.

Alex was a kind and sweet young man.  This just breaks our hearts.  RIP and may God be with the family at this difficult time.

Alex was my student in World History class this past year. He was a bright addition to my class, and his sense of humor and laid-back attitude was a joy. He had a great work ethic, and a shy, but insightful way of responding in class. Respectful, attentive and motivated to learn, Alex was a fine young man. I am so sad for his family and friends. He will be missed.
