It is with profound sadness that the family of Alfreda Cromwell announces her sudden passing on April 20th, 2016 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville at the age of 82. As in life, she was surrounded by her family as she joined the angels. Born in Southville, Digby County, Alfreda was the oldest of ten children born to Lloyd and Alvada (Cromwell) Bright. At a young age, she worked as a housekeeper for her beloved Hicks family in Bridgetown. She maintained a close relationship with Doris Hicks and her children throughout the years. After her marriage, Alfreda was a stay at home Mom to her children. Keeping her house spotless was a passion for her. She is known by all who know her as a wonderful cook. Her chocolate cakes, cinnamon rolls, date squares, fudge and pies will long be talked about by countless people near and far. It has often been quoted “You can always get a meal at Alfreda’s”. She thoroughly enjoyed feeding people. She enjoyed playing Bingo, cards and visiting people; in person or by phone. Left to mourn the loss of Alfreda are her children, Rick, at home; Leonard (Darcelle), Windsor; Paulette, Halifax, as well as a special daughter, Yolanna, Ont.; who referred to Alfreda as “Big Mom”, Grandchildren, Erica, Aaron, Amanda, Jeremy, Aidan and eleven great-grandchildren. Alfreda took her position as the matriarch seriously. She considered her siblings still children and could be a bit “bossy”. She was lovingly known as Sergeant Major by some. Siblings include brothers, Lloyd (Shirley), Southville; Glendon (Pat), Etobicoke, Ont.; Arnold (Wanda), Ottawa; sisters, Velda (Victor) Francis, Lequille; Volina (Earl) Cromwell, Dartmouth; Linda (Fred) Bailey, Lequille; Geneva (Danny) Cromwell, Danvers; brother in law, Bill Owen, Lower Sackville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Alfreda unofficially “adopted” several people including Cindy Shaw, Jim Smith (Clara Cromwell) and Sheila White (Larry Brooks). Besides her parents, Alfreda was predeceased by her husband of forty nine years, Richard Cromwell, daughter, Darla in infancy; special grandson, Ian who she raised; sister, Charlotte Owen; brother, Martin and sister in-law, Lola Bright. Visitation will be 7-9 pm at Jayne’s Funeral Home, Weymouth North on Monday, April 25th. Funeral service at 11 am, Tuesday, April 26th from St. Theresa’s Roman Catholic Church, Southville. Father Yvon Dionne officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the church cemetery. Donations in Alfreda’s memory can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. The family wishes to thank Dr. Donald Westby and Dr. Adam Clark, who were very special to Alfreda, also to all the other doctors and nurses in various health facilities during the past year.
