December 7, 1926 ~ July 8, 2016
Ray was born on the farm that his Dad homesteaded in 1909. Ray was the fourth child of five born to Herbert and Elsie Horner. Ray had many occupations over the years, farmer, carpenter and mechanic. It was when he was a farmhand for Stan Button that the new school teacher caught his eye. Muriel was boarding at Stan Button’s while teaching at Key West School. Ray swooned her and soon asked for her hand in marriage. Ray and Muriel Irene Cinnamon were married at Carnduff on October 18th, 1954. They moved to Hume where Muriel got a teaching position and after a couple of years they returned home to Ogema. Ray and Muriel lived in town where he worked at Bert Mead’s garage and farmed with his Dad. Ray and Muriel were blessed with one son, Melvin Scott, born September 13, 1956. In 1963 when his Dad retired, Ray took over the family farm and moved from town to the farm. He worked on the farm and also did sideline work as a carpenter. In 1975 they moved back to town. His Dad had died two years prior and his mom’s eye sight was failing, so they moved to town to take care of her. He was once again farming from town. Ray loved to garden and always planted a big one. There was always lots of great produce to share. You could always see him pulling weeds and hoeing. He also loved auction sales. When auction season arrived he would go many miles to attend them. He didn’t always buy but loved to visit, drink coffee, have egg salad sandwiches and really liked it when there was chili. He often said it was a good sale if there was chili on the menu. Ray loved to take his grandchildren to auction sales with him and sometimes he let them hold up the bidding card. Another passion of Rays was carpentry. He was always building, painting and remodeling. Whenever we needed help painting, fixing or repairing he would always find time to help out. Sometimes he would even paint before we knew we needed something painted. Ray loved to spend time with his grandchildren and would take them with him to rodeos and on the way home found time to stop for supper and even ice cream. He loved to tease them and taught them many things. Stopping at Grandpa’s meant a game of crib, hand and foot canasta or just a good visit. Ray lived a simple life, never having the need to travel, he loved to be close to home. You could often find him having coffee and visiting at one of the businesses in town. As age started creeping up on him, Ray sold some of the farmland and later sold it all. Alzheimer disease took over his mind and he had to be placed in the Bengough home. He continued to take things apart at the home. Over the first few days he took a lift bed apart without any tools and handed the head and foot board to the staff saying, “There you go.” It took the maintenance man quite a while to put it back together with tools. He walked many miles in the hallways of the home. Following a bad injury to his knee Ray was forced to move around the halls in a wheel chair. This small setback did not stop the farmer in him. He would get behind a chair and push it around in large circles. I think in his mind he was planting or harvesting his crop. The man who loved his grandchildren didn’t know them anymore but right to the end he knew Muriel and Melvin and was always ready for a visit with them. Ray was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Elsie Horner; in-laws, Roy and Janet Cinnamon; brothers and sisters, Stanley, Hilda, Dorothy (Robert) Hutton and Malcolm (Peggy) Horner and brothers and sisters in law, Fred Moreau, Dorothy (Russ) Fitzpatrick, Al Plews, Jim (Marie) Cinnamon and Bob Cinnamon. Ray was a husband to Muriel; father to Melvin and Cindy; grandfather to Micheal and Jana, Dwayne and Kelli, Daphne and Travis and Marina and Levi and a great grandfather to Caitlin, Andreas, Reyenna, Christian, Mason, Chloe, Araya, Kalia, Danika, Ciara, Jake and Jailin. Ray died peacefully at the Bengough Special Care Home with his family by his side.
