Edmund (Ed) Franklin Publack passed away peacefully at Tatakwa View on March 14, 2011, at the age of 87 years. He lost a month long battle with an aggressive infection, while dealing for the past few years with vascular dementia. Ed was predeceased by his parents Frank and Pauline, step-son Gary, and sister Blanche Weyman. Ed’s wife of 45 years, Ida (Kossatz), also passed away this Easter week in 1997.
Ed was a man who excelled in his sales career, bringing home many top Saskatchewan sales’ awards from Chrysler and GM. But the beginning of his sales career started in the 50’s travelling around southern Saskatchewan selling Fuller Brush. He went on to sell road equipment and Mercedes for Hume Johnston Distributors, then into selling vehicles for Beacon Motors and later Elmer’s Service until he retired.
However, the fond memories his family has are not of his career, but of his passion for camping and fishing in northern Saskatchewan; a love that was passed to his son and grandchildren who enjoyed those moments with him for many years. Be it camping with family, hunting with friends, or spending time in his large garden and proud patches of tomatoes and asparagus, Ed was a man who loved being outdoors. His landscaped yard, filled by Ed with flowers, cedars, and fruit trees, made it comfortable for Ida and he to sit in the shade, bird watching and enjoying each other’s company.
Ed and Ida travelled extensively in their Funcraft van to visit Doug, Laurie and grandchildren in Calgary. They also travelled to B.C. to visit friends and relatives, and on many occasions were joined by their family to camp and salmon fish; including Expo ’88. Trips were also taken to Montreal to visit Ida’s sister, sightsee, and take in culinary delights.
Ed is survived by his son Doug, daughter-in-law Laurie Metheral, grandson Jason, granddaughter Micki and husband Jordan Dutfield, and great grandson James Ender Dutfield .
