Walter M. Styslo, 72, of Wethersfield, passed away at home on Saturday, April 19, 2025. Born in Hartford on October 18, 1952, he was the son of the late Gabriel and Leona (Miller) Styslo. Walter was a 1971 graduate of Wethersfield High School. He worked for the State of CT Treasury Department for 48 years. He was an amateur radio enthusiast (call sign K1WMS), volunteering for the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), a national association for amateur radio, connecting hams around the U.S. with news, information and resources. He did tours, taught classes and administered testing for new hams. He also volunteered for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for the town of Manchester and the Manchester Road Race providing amateur radio support. He was also a member of BEARS (Better Emergency Amateur Radio Service) of Manchester, an amateur radio communication group. He always looked forward to his lunches with the “Friday Five” at Olive Garden in Manchester and breakfast with the BEARS.
Walter will be forever missed by his sister, Kathleen Cooper and husband John of Wethersfield; his nephew, Matthew Cooper and wife Jennifer of Wethersfield; his niece, Jennifer Labo and husband Matthew of West Hartford; his grand-nieces and grand-nephew, Brooke and Jack Cooper and Olivia Labo, as well as his many friends, including those in the ham radio community. In addition to his parents, Walter was predeceased by his sister, Suzanne Styslo.
Visitation will be Friday, April 25 from 10-11:30 a.m. concluding with a Prayer Service at 11:30 a.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.
