Jean (Drakos) Spargo, 93, of Avon, former longtime resident of West Hartford, peacefully passed away, Christmas day, Monday, December 25, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was the loving wife of the late Arthur Howard Spargo Jr. Jean was born February 1, 1930, and raised in Hartford, daughter to the late John Basil and Dorothy (Molles) Drakos. She attended Hartford schools, graduating from Bulkeley High School, Class of 1948, continuing her education at Russell Sage College for a year.
Jean was a devoted wife and mother, whose first and main priority was her family. She loved to entertain and was a gourmet cook, and phenomenal baker. In addition, she loved opera and classical music, and took wonderful trips with family and friends to Greece, England, and Italy. Jean was devout in her love for her Church and taught her children the importance of the Church.
Jean was a “lady” in the true sense of the word. She was gentle, gracious, warm, loving, and forgiving. She had a determined spirit and when it came to her health issues, she was a fighter.
Jean will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her loving family. Her children, Susanne D. Spargo of West Hartford, Arthur Howard Spargo III of Winsted, and James W. Spargo, with his fiancé, Karen, of Durham, New Hampshire; her six adored grandchildren, Andrew J. Spargo of Winsted, Caitlin J. Spargo of West Hartford, Alexis M. Spargo of Merrimack, New Hampshire, Nicholas J. Spargo (Navy Seaman E-3), stationed in Panama City, Florida, Nicole J. Hickey and Noelle E. Hickey, both of Huntington Beach, California; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins, who she loved dearly. Along with her husband, and parents, Jean was predeceased by her youngest child, her daughter Karen Spargo Hickey.
The Spargo family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Cherry Brook Staff for their wonderful care and compassion. They would also like to thank UCONN nurses Audrey and Katherine, who were at Jean’s side during her final hours.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the family at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford, Thursday, January 4, from 9:30 – 10:30 am, at which time a Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30. Interment will follow the Liturgy in Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Avenue, West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital, American Cancer Society, American Multiple Sclerosis Society.
