Faye (Walraven) Smith, 84, a longtime resident of Glastonbury, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at Seabury retirement community in Bloomfield, where she had lived for the past two years. She was the beloved wife of Lawrence Smith. Faye was born on September 14, 1937 in Poughkeepsie, NY and grew up in Cornwall, NY. She graduated from Cornwall High School in 1955 and continued her education at Wheaton College (IL), earning a BA in English in 1959. Faye and Larry married in 1959 and settled in Connecticut. Throughout her life, Faye was a teacher and librarian at various places including the Norwalk school system, Black Rock Congregational Church Nursery School, and Connecticut Valley Hospital. Faye cherished her children, grandchildren, and great grandson and was active in their lives. She will be remembered for her listening ear, wise counsel, quick wit, and friendship to many. She was an avid reader and was especially known for passing on an article or book she thought you might enjoy! Faye was an active member of First Church of Christ in Wethersfield, CT and her true passion in life was studying and teaching the Bible. She taught countless Bible studies over the years and delighted in teaching others how to read and understand the Scriptures. She also memorized numerous Bible passages throughout her life and could recall them on a moment’s notice. She committed her life to the biblical commandment to “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5).
Faye will be deeply missed by many but especially her family including children, Karen (Mark) Tucker and Douglas (Melinda) Smith, grandchildren Sarah Tucker, Michael Tucker, Annabeth Smith, and great grandson Calvin Smith, and siblings Richard Walraven, Joyce Walraven Eikenberg, and Tom Walraven.
