Albert T. DeCarlo, Jr., 83 of Ellington and formerly of Hartford, passed away September 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Albert was born Sept 10, 1941, in Hartford to the late Susan (Colangelo) DeCarlo and Albert DeCarlo.
Albert is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Dayle (Mascola) DeCarlo. Al and Dayle were married on August 19, 1967, at Saint Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church in Hartford. He was a devoted father to his daughter Tina and husband Scott Pioretta of Windsor, son Angelo and wife Natalie DeCarlo of Wethersfield and daughter Lisa of Ellington. He is a cherished grandfather to his three grandchildren, Jordan Girard, Brennan Girard and Elijah DeCarlo and great-grandfather to Neil and Elon Girard. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all; he will be forever missed.
Al attended Weaver High School before joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1960. He was a rifleman in the Marines and an excellent marksman who was proud of his service in the Corps and to his country. He was equally proud of his Italian heritage- his family immigrated to the United States from Calitri, Italy in the early 1900’s via Ellis Island. It was there the family’s last name was changed from Di Carlo to DeCarlo.
Al was a member of the Knights of Columbus and attained their highest rank, 4th degree. He was proud of his service to the church, country, community and the Knights. Albert was a softball umpire for over 35 years, conventional and fast pitch. Numerous times in retirement he was fondly approached by former players from games he umpired. An avid sportsman, he was an excellent golfer, bowler and baseball player in his day. He enjoyed playing defense in basketball and would try to emulate his idol, Bill Russell, on the court. Al was a big fan of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team and their Italian coach, Geno Auriemma. His favorite sports team, however, was the New York Yankees. He loved family trips to Yankee Stadium. He also loved watching Yankee games on TV with his son Angelo and grandson Jordan on a lazy Saturday afternoon.
