Scott was such an amazing person, and one of the best professors I've had in my academic training. I was extremely fortunate to take his course (HBTM 200: Pathology of Human Disease) at Harvard during the first year of my PhD. His passion for teaching and his kindness made a huge impact on me and I am so grateful to have crossed path with him. I got to speak with him over the following 2 years after the course ended, whenever we would run into each other at HMS or in the Longwood medical area. I am deeply saddened to hear about his sudden and untimely passing. My thoughts are with his loved ones. Thank you Scott for all you've taught me, and for always showing me and the world such incomparable kindness.

I am so sorry to hear of Scott's passing. He was always so friendly- and spoke to me despite never having to work directly with me while I was an admin at BWH. On one of my last times seeing him, he held open the door for me while I carried a ton of slides. He genuinely cared enough to ask how I was doing every time our paths crossed.  He was a genius and humble. I will miss him greatly. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends,  and to the BWH Pathology community.

The loss of a college friend who connected people is a gut punch. Scott's smile, contagious energy, and kindness brightened my outlook and lifted spirits in ways only a genuine soul could. Scott's presence turned moments into memories, and his joy and gift in teaching were palpable early on. The news of Scott's passing brings a numbing sense of disbelief. It feels like a void has opened up. I remember how Scott lifted spirits and had a knack for saying the right thing when needed. Scott's warmth enveloped us all, making strangers feel like lifelong friends. Scott is to be celebrated as we cling to the gift he gave us through his example: the reminder to spread kindness and to make others feel seen and valued. Though Scott left us too soon, Scott's legacy will forever inspire us to be better, to love more freely, and to carry forward the light he shared with the world.

I am very sorry to hear about Scott's passing. Scott was a brilliant, humble, and kind MSTP classmate at Wash U. He was selfless and always willing to help. I fondly recall his passion for discussions on a broad variety of topics including science, medicine, and politics. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

Scott was one of the first people I met at medical school- we were both new to St Louis and were part of a small group who started research lab projects before the rest of our class arrived. He was one of my first friends in the new and scary place that was WashU and he was a fierce and caring friend who watched out for everyone- encouraged all- and was eager to learn about absolutely everyone’s research and troubleshoot their travails. We celebrated our 21st birthdays together and raised our first legal glasses together.  He was an amazing co-conspirator during long labs, co-survivor of MSTP retreat canoes, friend and supporter throughout the long road of the MDPhD. When we graduated and delved into our disparate clinical worlds,  he has always been a distant friend that I knew I could connect with when needed and just knowing he was out there doing awesome things was a great feeling. He will be truly missed- as a great doc, a dedicated mentor, and someone who inherently was always a good friend.

I had the privilege of knowing Scott as a fellow resident and as a mentor in hemepath.  He was a wonderful person, a brilliant scientist, and a astute clinician.  His tragic passing is a huge loss to the whole community.

I first had the privilege of meeting Scott in HS during Governor’s School of Science in NJ, and then attended college with him as well. Scott’s kindness, generosity, brilliance, and enthusiasm were unparalleled.  Having birthdays a day apart, he never failed to wish me a happy one during our time at college.  I regret that we did not keep in touch, but I see he went on to do extraordinary things with his brilliant mind and have a wonderful partner. The world has lost a bright light. Sending lots of love and deepest condolences to his wife and parents.

Scott was our landlord, probably the best landlord we had in our lives. Today we are really sad to hear about his passing. Even when we weren't friends properly, he marked our time knowing him. He was nice, transparent, helpful, and very; very human. He made our lives better in so many ways and we will remember fondly the years that we lived in his apartment. We are thankful for the privilege of knowing him and all the help that he provided us. All our love goes to his wife and family.

There will never be sufficient words to describe the impact Scott had on everyone with whom he interacted. He exuded enthusiasm, kindness, and compassion. When he stood next to Ashwini, Scott would beam with so much love and excitement. I feel deeply privileged to have gotten to know Scott from his time at Leverett House: he was a pre-med tutor who was the perfect combination of passionate teacher, guide, listener, and disarmingly fierce advocate. Although he was not in residence with the students for whom he wrote long and detailed recommendation letters, Scott truly knew those students better than people who had lived under their same roof for years and where I had served as their dean. Anyone fortunate enough to spend time with him, was inspired by learning how he saved, healed, and changed lives as well as comforted families. When Scott and Ashwini came to the Leverett Senior Common Room events (and he and Ashwini were among the most diligent attendees), they were the people whom I immediately wanted to spend time with in the room; they elevated every exchange with a genuine glow of pure goodness, modeling for all of us the value of treating one another with the kind of special patience and understanding that celebrates life and creates enduring memories. Scott was an angel on earth and his memory will be a blessing. My heart goes out to Ashwini and Scott’s family and friends.

I am still shocked that Scott has been taken away. He was the first attending that I had the blessing of working with during my fellowship, and will always remember him for his brilliance, compassion, and passion for teaching. Scott was my attending when I was a heme path fellow at the Brigham, and he was a fantastic teacher, breaking down complicated heme path concepts so the fellows can absorb them. He was also an approachable person for career and professional development advice. It was a shock to hear that he left us at a young age, since he had and would have still continued to contribute a lot to the field of heme path.

I was heartbroken to hear of Scott Locitch's sudden passing. He was not just an incredible attending during my training; he was always up to chat about medicine or life. His kindness, openness, and eagerness to teach have impacted me and many others. His warmth and generosity were exceptional, touching everyone he met. Scott will be deeply missed.

I'm completely heartbroken over the news of Scott's passing.  I met Scott over 15 years ago in Boston at a WashU Alumni event and we instantly bonded.  Over the years we became close friends, always finding time to catch up, traveled to each other's weddings and met up as often as we could.  Scott was an amazing physician, so dedicated to his work and his students and so very kind.  He had the best smile and the most patient demeanor.  My heart breaks for Ashwini and Scott's entire family.  Sending you all my love and support during this very difficult time.

I'm stunned and saddened by the news of Scott's passing. During my recent residency at the Brigham, we connected over a shared passion for teaching. I very much enjoyed chatting with him during the course of normal business in the hospital and at HMS, and at social events. It was a delight and honor to work with him and learn from him as a facilitator for the pathology curriculum at HMS. His passion for pathology education was palpable and inspiring; he was valued by both his trainees and his colleagues. Based on the messages already posted, it is so clear that he's left a big footprint on the HMS community and impacted the lives of so so many student doctors and physicians- and his memory will continue to do so. I met Scott on my very first day of residency at BWH in 2008. He was one of the kindest people I have known, a caring and patient friend, teacher and mentor. My deepest condolences to Ashwini and to all of his family.

I just learned of Scott’s passing, and am shocked and saddened. He was a friend and fellow classmate in high school in Old Tappan, and I always found him to be such a kind and friendly soul along with his amazing brilliance. 

I feel so deeply for Ashwini, Mr. and Mrs. Lovitch, Gina, and all of those who love Scott. May we carry Scott’s smile with us in this world that needs more of people like him.

I first met Scott in med school in St. Louis, and almost 20 years later had the privilege of working with him and Ashwini on the HMS faculty council for anti-racism.  I will forever remember his kindness, sense of humor, and most of all his infectious enthusiasm for all things science and medicine related. Much love and condolences to his family for their loss.

I had the sincere privilege (and honor) of working with Scott for many years while he served as a phenomenal, one of a kind, premedical advisor for our students at Leverett House at Harvard College.  Scott had a magical way of connecting with our students and alumni as they prepared to apply to medical school.  His dedication to his applicants was unmatched as well as his unwavering commitment to being present at Leverett House as a member of our community. I will never forget having Scott and Ashwini join our Leverett House staff for Commencement Luncheons- he always made the time for our community.  I was always amazed at how present he was in all of our communications and interactions despite the numerous other obligations he had in his remarkable professional life.  He always made you feel seen and heard, and for a role with advising students, that quality is priceless.  Sadly, I hadn’t seen Scott in some time, however, his name has been on a post it note on my desk since spring break as I planned to reach out to him after the semester ended so we could reconnect.  I regret that I did not reach out sooner but will forever be thankful for his presence in my life and I will continue to carry Scott’s memory and legacy by aiming to advise my students just as he would. Scott trained me in Surgical Pathology when I was a newbie pathology resident at Brigham and Women's. He was a proficient teacher, super knowledgeable, and an incredibly nice guy. I'm sad to hear of his passing.

Our lab first met Scott through Ashwini, and he quickly became an invaluable member of the group and an important research collaborator. Scott helped us think how to connect our research with clinical needs and always provided detailed answers to everything we asked. He often helped our group (of mainly basic scientists…) to “clearly” see signs of disease in histological images, and he always did that with patience, kindness and a smile. I have learned so much from him and was looking forward to learning more. I will forever miss you Scott.

I feel such sadness knowing that Scott has passed away and much too soon. I always admired him for his utter brilliance and equal kindness. We were in the MSTP and the Immunology PhD program at Wash U together, although I was a few years ahead of him. I don't remember when I met Scott but I do remember when I started considering him a friend. In the hallways of the medical school he would always stop and say hello and have a nice chat with me. He was such a sweetheart. I couldn't imagine how anyone could not be friends with him! I was delighted to reconnect with him when we were both in pathology at BWH (he was in residency and I was in fellowship). I remember going out to lunch with Scott and our friend Oname to meet Ashwini for the first time. I felt so happy for him. They were such a lovely couple. My deepest condolences to Ashwini and to all of his family. He is truly missed.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about the loss of my friend Scott. We worked together  at HMS and he was so involved and dedicated to the students here. He helped me with the labs here in so many ways. I am grateful to have known him and to work with him was always such a great pleasure. HMS will miss him dearly. Scott Lovitch was one of my most memorable teachers in HST as my pathology section leader. His kindness and love of the subject matter was infectious. It's also been great to see him around the Brigham, where I am currently a resident. 

About a month ago, I was covering an oncology service and got a page from Dr. Lovitch. He had noticed something unexpected on the flow cytometry from one of the cancer patients we were treating, and wanted to discuss the finding. It turned out that his astute interpretation of the tumor sample changed the treatment for this patient, and his nuanced explanation helped me discuss what was going on with the attending and the patient and family. He also brought his warmth to the conversation, and it turned into an opportunity to catch up and hear about how he and Ashwini were doing and his adventures in medical education.

His passing is such a loss for the medical, medical education and physician-scientist communities. My heart goes out to Ashwini and his family and friends.

What a shock to so many of us! I have known Scott since my first day of residency at BWH in 2008. He was such a caring and patient teacher, always had time to go over difficult cases, and because of this kindness and his extraordinary diagnostic abilities, was always my favorite go-to person for any hemepath-related questions  He was a book of knowledge and a very caring physician. I just saw him last week, walking down the hallway with a stack of slides, no doubt busy getting all his work done before his trip, ensuring no one was inconvenienced by it. Even in such times of stress, he would flash his signature smile and had a kind word for anyone walking by. He will be dearly missed. My heartfelt condolences to Ashwini and all of his family.

Dear Scott. You were one of (if not my only tried and true) best friends with whom I have had the privilege to share fond memories. My first memory was meeting you on the residency interview trail in 2006 at WashU prior to us being BWH desk mates in 2007. We became close friends and shared many good times, especially at Cambridge Brewing Company(!) I purposely altered my residency plans to be 2009-2010 co-hematopathology fellows with you in the heme cave; that's how much of a friend you were to me. Around then, I remember you telling me about how you met/reconnected with a wonderful woman who was a talented dancer and former Harvard undergrad classmate; i remember you smiling (even more so) during those times. How it was my honor to have been your witness at your wedding (with said dancer!). There are more memories I could share, and I really wish I had taken more selfies of us(!). Even though I left for NYC, we regularly kept in touch with gchat, and always a phone call, if important or just because. You leave behind an indelible mark in many areas, including clinical service, teaching, research, mentoring, etc. etc. as you did everything 💯. What was most important to me, though, was that I knew you personally and we forged an awesome friendship. And I (and Angela!) thank you for that, Scott. You are and will be forever missed. I knew Scott and his family since he was a toddler. His father and I used to carpool to work for over 20 years.  I will never forget how he would run with a big smile to hug and greet his father when we got to his driveway. I always though what a blessing he was to his family and I would always drive home with a smile on my face and a picture of him jumping on his dad to welcome him home. 
He was extremely smart and always ready to help. My family and I send our prayers and deepest sympathies to Jeff, Joan, Gina, Ashwini and all the family and friends who knew him.

Dr. Lovitch is the exemplar of a physician-scientist educator. I am one of undoubtedly many students who benefited from his hematopathology lectures. 

Dr. Lovitch inspired me not only in his career, but also in his personal life. I got to know Ashwini through the Systems Biology department at HMS. I'll never forget how I would occasionally see Drs. Lovitch & Jambhekar hop off of the M2 during their morning commute. Dr. Lovitch would take not the most direct path from the M2 shuttle to BWH, but the path that passed by the Systems Biology department, maximizing the fraction of his commute that he could take with Dr. Jambhekar. This small gesture was always a beautiful one to me, and a reminder to devote time to those who matter most in our lives.

I am very saddened to hear of Scott’s untimely passing. He was a truly extraordinary person who achieved so much and helped so many. I was very fortunate to have been his classmate and team mate in Academic Decathlon over 30 years ago at Northern Valley High School. At that time, he was already in his own class intellectually, and really more like our assistant coach. I am grateful for what I learned from him then about hard work and pursuing one’s highest purpose. My sincerest condolences to Ashwini, Mr. and Mrs. Lovitch, Gina, and all of Scott’s family, friends and colleagues.

Scott leaves an irreplaceable spot in the HMS/PME community. Although I only worked with Scott for a short time, his kind spirit cannot go unnoticed and certainly won't be forgotten. We are all blessed to have known him.

I am so very sorry to hear of Scott's passing. He and I completed the HMS Academy Medical Education Fellowship in 2016-2017. Our group bonded over med ed, politics, personal/family stuff,  and Scott could always be depended on to be kind, and caring, and sensitive to others' spoken and unspoken needs and concerns. Over the years since, I saw Scott teach in the amphitheatre, attended  innumerable zoom meetings together, and Scott was always present, and thoughtful, and kind. He will be missed.

The news of Scott's passing is devastating to so many. I have known and worked with Scott at Harvard Medical School for 15 years, and I can attest to the tremendous impact he has had on students, staff and faculty. Scott was the true definition of the word "stalwart," and as such, it's impossible now to fathom our program without him. As an educator, Scott was tireless and utterly committed to his students. It was a pleasure to teach in his courses; he clearly fostered an environment of curiosity and open dialogue in his classroom. Despite his young age, in the course of his career Scott no doubt inspired hundreds of physicians and scientists in training to dig a little deeper and to explore concepts that would be addressed superficially at best in most curricula. Scott approached his work as a pathologist  with the same generosity of spirit as his work in his classroom; we all benefited from his expertise, ready availability, and kindness. He will be greatly missed.

Scott was the first faculty member I worked with during a visiting resident rotation at BWH in 2015. He was subsequently my attending in fellowship, and has remained a friend and professional acquaintance ever since. I’ll always remember Scott as an exceptionally kind, brilliant, selfless and genuine person and colleague. My deepest condolences to all those who had the privilege of having Scott as a fixture in their lives.

Scott was an amazing friend and colleague for over 20 years, dating back to our days as medical students and continuing on as co-residents and then as attendings at BWH. Throughout this long journey, Scott has been a role model of integrity, dedication, achievement, and most of all, kindness.  He has left a indelible mark on all who worked with him, learned from him or benefitted from his compassionate nature. Scott, you will be deeply missed.
