FUNA Robert J. (AKA) Funabashi, passed on as a result of pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 90. He is survived by his loving wife Joan of 54 years; four children: David of Scottsdale, AZ and his wife Gricel, Darren of Wayne, NJ and his wife Tricia, Mark of Brick, NJ and his wife Lori, and Bonnie of Woodcliff Lake, NJ and her husband Tom; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Born in NYC in 1921, the family settled in Lyndhurst, NJ where he graduated from high school in 1938 and graduated, with honors, in 1942 from Villanova University. He served in the armed forces in World War II in Italy and France, 100th Infantry Battalion, 442 Regiment Combat Team, made up of Americans of Japanese descent. The 100th Battalion was one of the most decorated units in World War II, achieving four Presidential Unit Citations, four Congressional Medals of Honor and recently awarded a collective Congressional Gold Metal for their service. After military service, he spent the next 45 years in the textile industry in NYC, retiring in 1991 as Senior Vice President of a leading home furnishing company. He lived and raised his family in River Vale, NJ and retired to Mahwah in 1990. His favorite pastimes were golf and watching college basketball. He loved the outdoors and gardening and trips to the casinos. He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception, Mahwah, NJ.
