She was born on June 9, 1952 to Maxwell Alfred and Jennie Wiedow on a US Army Base in Heidlberg, Germany. She was their only daughter out of four children. As a child, she had a contagious laugh with a caring heart. She loved to help her father out during the summers at his snack stand at the Bayonne pool.
Kathy loved to read and learn new things. She graduated high school from Holy Family Academy in Bayonne, NJ in1970. Kathy went on to study nursing at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. In 1969, Kathy met the love of her life, Edward Stephen Szabo Sr. After graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 1974, Kathy landed her first job as an ER nurse at Jersey City Medical Center. She worked there for over five years. Kathy and Ed were happily married on May 18, 1975.
When Kathy had her first child (Kristen) in 1978, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother. Two years later, the Szabo family welcomed their second daughter (Jessica Lynn). Kathy loved taking her girls to the park, riding bikes, and swimming in the pool. In 1987, the family was completed by the addition of their son, Edward (“Eddie”) Stephen Szabo Jr. Kathy went back to school to pursue her love for nursing and helping children. She worked hard to achieve her Certificate of School Nursing (CSN). Kathy loved working as the school nurse at Warren Point Elementary School in Fair Lawn, NJ for almost two decades upon retiring in 2015.
Kathy loved spending time down the shore with her husband (Ed) at their beach house in Seaside Park, NJ. She enjoyed reading novels on the beach, crocheting and knitting blankets, having lunch dates with ‘the girls’ from Warren Point, playing cards and games with her grandchildren, collecting shells and sea glass on the beach, singing, watching her soap operas and her nightly CSI series, playing with her furry golden retriever grandchildren, and taking long afternoon naps.
Kathy had a heart of gold that knew no bounds. She would go above and beyond to help anyone in need. Kathy always had a positive outlook and attitude in everything she did or with anyone she encountered. She had a great sense of humor and had a contagious laugh. Heaven gained an angel as she will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
Kathy was predeceased by her parents (Maxwell Alfred and Jennie Wiedow) and her brother (William Wiedow). Kathy is survived by her loving husband (Edward Stephen Szabo Sr), her daughter and son-in-law (Kristen and Jeffry Steidl) of Rockaway, NJ , her daughter and son-in-law (Jessica and Michael Nick Sr) of Pompton Lakes, NJ, her son Edward (“Eddie”) Stephen Szabo Jr of Andes, NY, her two brothers (Al and Jim Wiedow), and her three cherished grandchildren (Taylor Lynn Steidl, Michael “Mikey” Nick Jr, and Katie Ann Nick) that adored their "Beemy".
