Kathleen P. Steele, age 72, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023. Raised in Hillsdale, NJ, she was a resident of Allentown, PA for over 40 years. Predeceased by her parents Thomas & Patricia Steele, and sisters Deborah Lopchuk & Patricia Mansey, Kathleen is survived by her siblings Thomas, Marguerite, Therese & Geoffrey, as well as five loving nieces and nephews. A graduate of Caldwell College in NJ, Kathleen received her Ph.D. in Biology in 1977 from West Virginia University. After working for two years at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia, she was an assistant professor of Biology at Moravian University in Bethlehem, PA, where she taught Biology & Genetics; thereafter, she taught Biology, Chemistry & Physics at Pius X High School in Bangor, PA for 30 years until her retirement in 2015.
Kathleen received numerous awards over the years, including the Catholic Education Award from Pius X; the Lindback Foundation Distinguished College Teaching Award; the Grand Master Award from the Da Vinci Science Center; and the Outstanding Biology Teacher of Pennsylvania from the National Association of Biology Teachers. Upon retirement, Kathleen continued to review books and research articles for professional journals and also wrote and reviewed questions for scholastic scrimmage competitions for the high school, where she then acted as moderator and judge. She was a member of the Lehigh Valley Pops Orchestra where she played the trumpet. She also played guitar, trombone, flute & violin in her spare time. She volunteered much of her free time at the local food bank and at the Wildlands Conservancy. Additionally, Kathleen enjoyed hiking (especially at Hawk Mountain), bird watching, clay shooting, fly fishing and reading history and mystery novels.
The family will receive guests at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd., Westwood, NJ on Wednesday, June 14th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. A Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church at 69 Valley St., Hillsdale, NJ on Thursday, June 15th at 10 a.m., with entombment immediately following at Garden of Memories in Washington Twp., NJ. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date.
