My favorite thing about Oma was how she always took us hiking or to places where we would learn about other cultures. Oma always shared her love of animals with us and is the reason why I became infatuated with wolves. She saw my interest in them and would always give me books about wolves so that I could continue to learn about them. One of my treasured gifts by her is a small dream catcher with a wolf in the center of it. That was my first dream catcher and it inspired me to learn more about where they came from. Oma always gave us reasons to continue learning about the world around us and she has taught me how to be conscious and respectful of all living things around me. She is the reason why I see beauty in everything that grows. ~ Alicia Whalen

My Oma filled my life with so many memories from standing on the sidelines of soccer games, behind the fence at baseball, and in the audience during my plays. I remember during my father's wedding when I was walking Oma down the aisle to her seat, she said to me, I really hope I don't trip and fall in front of all these people. We both let out a little laugh as we continued to walk. That's just who Oma was though. She was the kind of person who knew how to make light of any situation, but at the same time was always the first person to show her support. It reminds me of the time when she came to see one of my plays, and during the show I had to kick someone out of their seat. My dad had come a night earlier and knew where I would kick someone out and decided to sit there with Oma. When that part of the show came up, I left the stage to where they and of course kicked my dad out of his seat. I sat down next to Oma, who looked at me with the biggest smile and said, Now that wasn't very nice! She then continued to tell me how great of a job I was doing and how proud of me she was. Any chance she could ask my father about me or ask me how I'm doing she would. She would also tell me to be safe and to keep my grades up. Now I know that for the rest of my life I will have this strong little German woman looking over me telling me to do my best, and when I do something good I know she will be telling everyone in heaven how proud of me she is.

I met Heide in July 2007 -- and she forever changed my life.  She was and will continue to be an inspiration to me.  I feel honored to have known her, and will cherish the moments I shared with her.  Heide will live on in my heart.
