Gilbert of River Vale, NJ formerly of Midland Park, NJ on Wednesday, April 8, 2015. Beloved husband of JoAnna (nee DePalma) Steiner. Devoted father of Penelope Lamendella and her husband John and Evan Steiner and his fiancée Krista Blomberg. Loving step-father of John and Jordan Mitchell. Cherished grandfather of Jack Lamendella. Dear cousin of Barbara Turlich and her husband Herb. Also survived by his former wife Diana Steiner.
Gil was a Professor of Mathematics at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ where he taught for 35 years. During his tenure, Gil served on numerous committees for which he was awarded the University Distinguished Faculty Award for Service. He served as Department Chair and School Director for many years. At retirement he was awarded Emeritus status and later elected to FDU’s Heritage Hall of exceptional individuals who had a major impact on shaping the Teaneck and Rutherford Campuses. Prior to arriving at FDU, Gil taught at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia and Reed College in Portland, OR. Gil was a proud graduate of the University of Michigan where he received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in Functional Analysis.
For the past many years, Gil was a tutor with Literacy Volunteers of America, volunteering his time at the River Vale Public Library.
The family will receive their friends at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ on Sunday, 2-5PM. All other services are private.
