Gerard was born in the Bronx to Anna (McMahon) and Frank Carty. Gerard was pre-deceased by his wife of 53 years, Kathleen, his son Gerard Jr., and his brother Gene Carty.
Gerard attended Cardinal Hayes High School and was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Following graduation, Gerard enlisted in the Army, and served in Korea where he was on loan to the Air Force. After residing in the Bronx, Gerard moved his family to Hillsdale NJ, where he and Kathleen raised their children, Ann Bruchansky (Peter) of Hamden, CT: the late Gerard Jr. (Patty); Eileen Kenah (Donald) of Downers Grove, IL; John Carty (Eileen) of Hillsdale, and Donald Carty of Hillsdale. Gerard is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Lauren (Michael) Tedford, Elizabeth Bruchansky, Kevin Carty, Christine Schaaf (Jimmy), Kyle Carty, Gerard Kenah, Kathleen Kenah, and Brian Kenah. He is also survived by 16 loving nieces and nephews.
After serving as Vice President of the former Walsh Construction Company, he formed his own consulting company, Carty Associates, became a mediator for the American Arbitration Association, and served as Executive Director of The Moles, a fraternal organization of the heavy construction industry.
Gerard was an active parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church, Hillsdale, where he was a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, served on the Parish Council, Finance Council, Building Committee and was a founding member of the St. John’s Bridge Club. He was active in numerous civic activities, including serving on the Hillsdale Sewer Committee, and the Hillsdale Library Board. Gerard traveled the world with Kathleen with cruise ships being their preferred method of travel. In addition to receiving the Moles Annual Member Award for Outstanding Achievement in Construction, Gerard was a fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Visitation will take place on Friday, April 12 from 4 to 7 PM at St. John the Baptist Church, 1 Valley St., Hillsdale, NJ 07642. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Church at noon on Saturday, April 13. Burial will follow at St. Luke’s Cemetery, Hohokus.
