Gary Emil Katen

Today we remember a life well lived, and a man who offered you anything you needed and never asked for anything in return. Gary Emil Katen, 65, son of the late Emil S. Katen, passed away on December 13, 2023. Gary was born in Brooklyn, NY, and graduated from Pace University. He was extremely intelligent and at 25 years old ran the telecom department at Bankers Trust. A few years later with some partners, Gary open GAIN Communications. Gary was the heart of GAIN for over 35 years, installing and servicing phone systems. He also used his business acumen serving on the Advisory Board of ConnectOne Bank.

Gary was the most positive, upbeat, generous, and selfless person and was loved by his enormous circle of family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his husband Ron Vander Vliet, sister Kate Takla, brother-in-law Ronnie Takla, niece Karen Takla, nephew Christian Farag and the Vander Vliet family. Gary always enjoyed his time at his hunting lodge in PA looking out at the lake with his pups, Cody and Sammy.

We here on earth will bear the pain of his absence. There is no way to express the deep loss we are feeling. To honor Gary’s wishes, there will be a celebration of his life in January. Gary always wanted to spread his love and zest for life, so we are not surprised this is how he wanted us to honor him. Only by sharing beautiful tributes of Gary’s cherished memories can we begin to mend our broken hearts. He will be missed by all who knew him.

There will be a private service for the family to honor Gary.
