to Manhattan as a child and attended Stuyvesant High School, one of nine NY City specialized high schools for students who excel academically. In his youth he volunteered at the YMCA where he coached boy's swimming and gymnastics. On his 21st birthday he followed in his father's footsteps and began a 4-year apprenticeship in Stereotypers Union #2/1SE, before joining the New York Times. He worked at the Times for over 58 years.
He met the love of his life, Norma Redding in the summer of 1960 at Culvemere Resort. They got married in 1961 and moved to Closter, NJ where they raised 3 children. Douglas, Bruce and Carolyn learned to love the outdoors from their dad. He taught them how to do flips and dives into lakes, hike the mountains, sleep under the stars, canoe down rivers and swim in the ocean. He always welcomed his kids' friends to come and share adventures with the family. He continued the adventures with his 2 grandsons, Daniel and Christian, enjoying summers at the beach, trips to the Adirondacks and many other family activities.
Charles (known as Al to friends and family) served as a Shop Steward, a Member of the Board, and eventually Vice President of the Local Stereotypers Union. He volunteered at many organizations in Closter, including the Nature Center, the Environmental Commission and the Board of Adjustment.
Al will be remembered for his love for his wife and family; his sense of humor; and his legacy of civic responsibility and volunteerism. As his grandsons would say, " Grandpa is the MAN"
He is predeceased by his parents, Charles A. Evans and Ida Wanner Evans, and his brother Ralph G. Evans. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Norma (his “Bride”, his “Pie”). He is also survived by his children, Douglas W Evans (Patricia Stolte), Bruce Evans (Anna Vitale) and Carolyn Evans Frederiks; and his grandchildren, Daniel Francavilla and Christian Francavilla (Ashley Bennett).
Al’s family would like to express their love and the deepest gratitude to Joyce White, who cared for him with compassion, humor, respect and always a little bit of song. Grateful thanks as well to Tasha Dixon and Michael Afarih for their consistent support and positive energy.
The family will receive their relatives and friends at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, J on Sunday, June 30 from 2-6PM. The Funeral Mass wil lbe held at St. Mary R.C. Church, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Monday, July 1 at 11AM. Entombment will follow at Garden of Memories, Twp. of Washington, NJ.
For anyone who would prefer, donations to The Alzheimer’s Association, The Closter Ambulance Corps, or The Sierra Club Foundation can be made in lieu of flowers.
