Carmela Turco, 86, of Park Ridge, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, with two of her favorite people by her side—her beloved daughter Donna and cherished granddaughter Riana.
Born in July 1938 to the late Louis and Felicia Liquori, Carmela was raised in Harlem alongside her brother and best friend, the late Frank Liquori. Affectionately known in the neighborhood as “Tiny,” her small stature was never a match for her larger-than-life personality and unmistakable voice. That voice—powerful, soulful, and unforgettable—launched her into the spotlight at just 16 years old as a recording artist and performer. She was even invited to embark on a nationwide tour to share her talents with the world. But young and in love, Carmela chose a different path—one rooted in family, love, and home.
Over the years, she and her family made homes in New York, Florida, and New Jersey, where she settled into becoming a true Jersey girl. Carmela’s greatest passions in life were all the good things that were just a little bit bad – devil dogs, chocolate kisses, shopping (oh, how she loved QVC!), trips to and even a job at the beauty parlor and trashy celebrity magazines. Even as she grew older, Carmela was a trendsetter and spotter, always in the know on the latest fashion fads, pop culture gossip and best movies to watch.
In her later years, Carmela lovingly answered to “Nanny” and “Little Nan,” titles she wore with pride. She adored being surrounded by babies and children—especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren—who were the light of her life.
Carmela is survived by her daughters Donna Martini and Toni Ann Rinaldo; grandchildren Dena Toms, RJ Martini, Riana McShea, Alexis McShea, and AJ Rinaldo; and great-grandchildren Lucas Toms, Nolan Toms, Francesca Toms, and Nico Pizzanelli. She also leaves behind many dear nieces, nephews, family and friends including her sister-in-law Rosemarie D’Annucci and best friends Shannon, Nichole and Christina.
A Catholic Mass and celebration of Carmela’s life will be held on Saturday, April 26th at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 46 Pascack Road in Park Ridge, New Jersey.
