Irene Andersen was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 15th 1926. Chance led to Irene, her mother, and brother, moving to her parent's home country of Norway, leaving her father in America. She spent her childhood there, surviving the German occupation of World War II. By 18 she had saved enough money to move back to America, re-joining her family in Brooklyn.
While she was adjusting to life in America, she met marine engineer Andy Andersen. The two were quickly married, and the adventure began. Andy traveled across the world for work and Irene and their two daughters traveled with him wherever he went.
When Andy retired, they returned, once again, to America, settling in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. In retirement, Irene and Andy loved to host visiting family, travel the country, and vacation in Maine.
Irene was an active member of her church and a regular contributor to the annual Strawberry Festival. She spent many years volunteering for Meals on Wheels. In particular, she enjoyed spending time with the folks she delivered to, and listening to their stories. She lived in Upper Saddle River for 44 years, before recently relocating to Sheldon, Vermont, where she passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Ed Berger, her daughter, Joan Twombly, grandsons, Jonathan and Andrew, granddaughter-in-law, Ginny, and two great-grandchildren, Emily and Owen.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Meals on Wheels in her name.
A visitation for Anna will be held Sunday, July 23, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ
