Robert (Andy) Lee Anderkin, born August 4, 1917, in the small mining community of Trosper, KY, passed away on August 13, 2012, at the home of his daughter in Long Beach, CA. After graduating from Mt. Vernon High School, Mt. Vernon, KY where he was captain of the basketball team, he joined the US Navy. He served on a variety of ships including the Shangri-La, aircraft carrier; Sommers, destroyer; Healy, destroyer; Amsterdam, light cruiser; Orca, sea plane; Chickarilla, fleet tug, and his final ship, the Burton Island, ice breaker, which helped survey the Arctic for the building of the DEW line in the mid-1950s. He retired in 1959 as a Chief Petty Officer, Electrician Mate. He met his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Liz), on a blind date and married her in February 1950. She preceded him in death. Mr. Anderkin is survived by his daughter, Patricia Lee Anderkin Ferrer (Eduardo); his two grandchildren, Kerry E. (O’Hern) Grover (Matthew) and Kevin M. O’Hern (Anne); three step-grandchildren Michelle Fennell (Troy); Eduardo R. Ferrer (Lindsay); and Raquel Ferrer; and great grandson, Jayden Fennell. He was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters; his surviving siblings are Louise Mullins, Orlando, KY and Dallas Anderkin (Cathy), Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Graveside services to be held on Friday, August 17, 2012, 11 AM, at Westminster Memorial Park. Family requests that no flowers be sent and instead a contribution to the donor’s favorite charity or Navy Relief be made in his name.
