Bill was born to Orvel and Vivian Clausen on October 14,1934 in Decatur, Illinois. Even though he was an only child, he enjoyed his childhood surrounded by a large extended family.
Bill cared deeply about his time at the University of Illinois where he met the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Karen, and pursued bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. After graduation, Bill spent 30 years with TRW space and defense sector, both at Space Park in Redondo Beach and the Capistrano Test Site (CTS) in San Clemente. Bill was a lifelong student and eventually went on to get his MBA at Pepperdine University. While Bill loved learning, his wife Karen and his family were his true loves. Bill enjoyed the time he spent in Indian Guides with his son Brad and coaching his daughter Laurie in both soccer and softball.
Upon retirement, Bill became an active member of the American Red Cross, Greater Long Beach Chapter. Here is where he found his true passion. Bill spent over 25 years volunteering his time. He served on many disaster service trips, alongside his wife. The most impactful being the time spent in New York after 9-11. Bill was recognized with the National Disaster Preparedness and Response Volunteer Award in 2008, and eventually served as President of the Board, Greater Long Beach, Rio Hondo and South Bay Chapter for two years. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service in 2019.
Retirement also brought more time for his family. Bill prioritized his grandchildren, making multiple trips a year to Colorado to see them. He loved the many family vacations, sporting events, and card games. Spending time with them meant everything to him.
Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. The impact Bill left on others is indescribable. His family will miss him deeply, but there is comfort in knowing Bill has been reunited with his son Brad who passed away in 1997.
Bill is survived by his wife, Karen, daughter Laurie Moller (Eric), and granddaughters Marissa Korte (Brian) and Stephanie Wright (Eric).
A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
